Vehicle: 55996 Set: P4
DMPV 55996 is on the rear of the 1.35pm Stourport-on-Severn Junction - Birmingham Snow Hill service on October 15th, 1966. It is attached to the rear of two 3-car Class 116 sets and seen at Galton Bridge, Smethwick. Note the damaged gangway cover, not unusual on these vehicles. It carries set number P4 in the cab window. Michael Mensing.
Vehicle: 55996 Set: P4
DMPV 55996 on an up working at Galton Bridge, Smethwick at 1.02pm on October 22nd, 1966. The vehicle has been turned since passing over the bridge the previous week. The P4 in the window is a set number, on this date Tyseley had 55993-6, so this was the 4th parcel vehicle. Michael Mensing.
Vehicle: 50407
M50407 leads this Park Royal set heading for Stafford at Salton (Smethwick) on October 22, 1966. Michael Mensing.
Now known as Handsworth, the Saturday only midday Birmingham Snow Hill to Wolverhampton Low Level single car leaves Handsworth & Smethwick in 1971. Snow Hill by now had 6 daily deps to Wolverhampton and 4 to Langley Green. 4 tracks are back in place with the Jewellery Line and the Metro. Stephen Burdett.
Vehicle: 50092 Set: 300
Tyseley Derby triple set 300 (M50092 leading) is seen at Smethwick West with the 1.0pm (approximately) Birmingham Snow Hill - Stourbridge - Kidderminster - Bewdley service on October 22, 1966. Michael Mensing.
Three class 116 DMUs combine on this Birmingham New Street to Hereford service as it passes Smethwick West on 27/5/1972. Whilst services in those days were not frequent, I would imagine that this was to move I or 2 of the units to Kidderminster or Worcester. The Rowley Hills can be seen in the distance. Stephen Burdett.
In the town they were constructed - a BRC&W formation has just passed Smethwick Rolfe Street station with the 1.25pm Birmingham New Street - Manchester Piccadilly via Stoke-on-Trent service on 2 February 1964. Michael Mensing.
Vehicle: 50064 Set: TS519
Two Class 116 DMUs arrive into Smethwick West station on 9 April 1977. Leading is set TS519, presumably 50064 + 59019 + 50115. Michael Mensing.
A mish-mash DMU (a 116 with probably a 127 TS) is seen between Langley Green and Smethwick West in the Black Country in October 1986 while working a Stourbridge Junction to Birmingham New Street service. There was, and still is, a 15 minute service frequency on this line so any number of pictures could be taken in a variety of locations. I particularly liked this area because of the industrial backdrop. Peter Tandy.
Set: TS515
Two DMU sets depart from Smethwick West on 9 April 1977. Furthest is a refurbished Class 101, closest is a Class 116 which is displaying set number TS515 on a temporary board in the cab window, the characters being chalked on. Michael Mensing.
Set: TS401
A Class 101 and Class 116 arrive at Smethwick West with the 14:14 Lichfield City-Kidderminster service on 9 April 1977. All three Met-Camm vehicles appear ex-works, but bizarrely one is in plain blue and two in the refurbished white/blue stripe livery. Michael Mensing.
A Class 116 DMU is seen at Smethwick West on 9 April 1977. Michael Mensing.
Vehicle: 53837 Set: TS621
This isn't the greatest shot of Smethwick West signal box but I was keen to have a few pictures of trains passing it as even in 1986 there were reports of its closure. This finally happened in 1990 when the line was resignalled. Here is my only picture of a DMU passing the box with T621 (presumably 53837 + 59604 + 53919) passing by on a Birmingham New Street to Great Malvern service on 29 August 1986. I once spoke to a relief signalman who worked the box on occasions and was told that the frame interlocking area had a large population of rats in residence and that the relatively isolated location made it a target for vandals from the surrounding area. Few signalmen mourned its passing. Peter Tandy.
Vehicle: 53849 Set: TS620
Tyseley's class 116 T620 (presumably 53849 + 59606 + 53878) was photographed near Smethwick West on 5 June 1986 with a Birmingham to Worcester fast service. The shot nearly didn't make the cut because of the poor framing caused by me pressing the shutter release too late! The redeeming feature was the information board in the central cab window telling the public that this train was an express. Peter Tandy.
Set: TS411
Three-car Class 101 DMU set TS411 is seen in Smethwick West station on 17 September 1976. Michael Mensing.
Vehicle: 50679
With "Llanelly" on the destination blind W50679 leads the 9.20am Cardiff General - Hereford - Birmingham Snow Hill service past Galton, Smethwick, on 22 October 1966. Michael Mensing.
