101 DMU

30th September 1985

Taken on 30/09/85, the first full day of electric services south of Rock Ferry to Hooton the one time Chester to Rock Ferry DMU service was thus cut back to Hooton. A Chester allocated 2-car 'Met-Cam' set is seen soon after arrival with the 12.47 from Chester. From this date until MerseyRail electrification to Chester the DMU shuttle used the Helsby line platform to turn back in while the EMU's used the former GWR/LMSR joint line mainline platforms. Even by this date the platform to the right was out of use being part of the run round for freights arriving from the Chester line destined for Ellesmere Port and vice versa. Adrian Nicholls.

2nd October 1985

With the former Jubilee cotton mill as a backdrop, A pair of Eastern Region two-car DMU's, a Metro-Cammell Class 101 and a BRCW Class 110 were approaching the village of Croston with a Preston to Ormskirk service on October 2nd 1985. The leading Class 101 set with it's West Yorkshire PTE 'Metro Train' branding has DTSL E54218 at the front. The pair of units had previously worked to Preston from Leeds and during their layover at Preston before returning back over the Pennines, they were utilised on an out-and-back teatime Ormskirk service. The 16:03 from Dunblane arrives into Falkirk Grahamston (which is undergoing 'modernisation'). The photographer notes the power cars as 53141 + 53172, and The centre car carries the HA depot 'castle' logo. Hamish Stevenson.

In the far background, Stùc a' Chroin and Ben Vorlich dominate with Stirling Castle and the town in the mid distance. To the right of the unit can just be seen the start of the branch to Polmaise Colliery, Bruce Galloway.

A trio of Heaton based class 101 2-car DMU's are seen at Stanhope Excursion station on the then freight only Weardale line from Bishop Auckland to Eastgate Cement Works with the 'Wear & Wensley Dalesman' on 19/10/85. This Hertfordshire railtour had started from London Kings Cross with 31 447 and 31 448 to Darlington where tour passengers swapped to the DMU formation for traversal of the two lengthy freight lines to Eastgate in Weardale and Redmire in Wensleydale. A trio of Heaton allocated class 101 2-car DMU's are seen at the closed station of Stanhope on the Weardale line on October 19, 1985. By this date the line beyond Bishop Aukland was retained as a freight only line serving Etherley ballast tip and Eastgate Cement Works the station at Stanhope having closed on 29/05/1953. This railtour operated by Hertfordshire Railtours had started from London Kings Cross behind 31 447 and 31 448 loco hauled to Darlington. To cover the two lengthy freight branches in Weardale and Wensleydale passengers transferred to this six car DMU formation for the middle six hours of the day 11.30 to 17.43. The same class 31's then returned the tour passenger to London leaving Darlington at 18.05. Adrian Nicholls.
