This image was rescued, using Mac software, from a grossly under-exposed transparency. I recorded the location as "near Llanrwst" (we were on a family holiday based in this village at the time) and the only record I have of the DMU is that one car was 51224. It was paired with 51533 in unit 101679. The train is the 09.35 Blaenau-Llandudno and the date was 28 July 1997. Lewis Bevan.
Class 101 unit 101685, made up of 53160/59539/53164. on a Blaenau Ffestiniog-Llandudno working at Llandudno Junction on 1 August 1997. This unit was built by Metropolitan-Cammell and dates from 1957/1957. 101685 spent its final few years in service in green livery, as seen here, and was one of the last 5 units withdrawn from service at Newton Heath on 24 December 2003. After withdrawal it was purchased for preservation and is now operational at the NYMR. Lewis Bevan.

We took several family holidays in North Wales in the 1990s, and I always had a "railway day" on these breaks, usually involving some Class 37 haulage. On 1 August 1997 I arrived in Holyhead on a train from Llandudno worked by the green-liveried Class 101 set 101685 (53164 + 59539 + 53160). My photo shows this set at Holyhead awaiting departure east - I didn't record the train it was working, I was awaiting the 13.56 Holyhead-Crewe with 37426, which would take me to Bangor. Lewis Bevan.
