18th September 1979
The Newton Heath based Class 104 3-Car DMU sets embellished with a white stripe were the mainstay of services between Blackpool North & Manchester Victoria in the 1970's. In a scene that was repeated daily, M50472 brings up the rear of Manchester Victoria bound service as it calls at Chorley on a warm afternoon on September 18th 1979. The station buildings in this view were swept away in the 1980's when the station was reconstructed. Beyond the now-removed Signalbox is the former Goods Yard, now part of the the station car park. Normally used on Manchester Victoria to Blackpool North services, one of the three-Car Newton Heath allocated Class 104 sets complete with its white bodyside stripe, was working the Kirkham to Blackpool South shuttle service on September 19th 1979. M50474 arrives from Kirkham along a route that was still double track into the magnificent station at St-Annes-On-The-Sea. Martyn Hilbert.

A BRC&W class 104 DMU (M56175 closest) waits for it's departure time at Rose Hill (Marple) with a service to Manchester Piccadilly. Rose Hill was the first stop on the once on the through route from Marple Wharf Junc to Macclesfield a distance of 11 miles, which closed to all traffic on the 5th January 1970 (now the Middlewood Way footpath) with this short section to Rose Hill being retained. 29th September 1979. A BRC&W class 104 DMU led by M56175 rolls into Rose Hill (Marple) with a service from Manchester Piccadilly. Rose Hill was the first stop on the once on the through route from Marple Wharf Junc to Macclesfield a distance of 11 miles, which closed to all traffic on the 5th January 1970 (now the Middlewood Way footpath) with this short section to Rose Hill being retained. The track and platform on the opposite side have since gone only the platform I'm standing on and its track remain here now. 29th September 1979. Andrew J Crowther.

A Class 104 DMU, the label in the first passenger window reads 'To Doncaster Works'. On the right is freshly painted Class 101 E50182, the TBS behind is presumably E59078. Both were transferred from Darlington to Norwich in November 1979 and seem to have stopped in Doncaster Works en-route for refurbishment being released in blue/grey in December. An interior photo of a Class 104, possibly taken to emphasize the rather poor covering of the ashtray apertures in the backs of the seats. The Eastern Region moquette and second class seating behind the cab suggests that this is one of the power cars in the small batch of five ER 2-car Class 104 sets, E50594-598 Huddersfield Examiner.
