On a warm June 28th 1980 with the train crew looking on, a six-car BRCW Class 104 'White-Liner' DMU was stood at Poulton-Le-Fylde with a Blackpool North to Manchester Victoria service. Driving Motor Composite Lavatory Car M50530 was leading the formation. Standard fare along the Manchester-Blackpool route from the late 1960's until around 1982, they were part of the large allocation of 104's at Newton Heath Depot. The well-worn sets were replaced by Swindon Class 120's cascaded from various parts of the country, a temporary measure until the new Class 150/2 Sprinter fleet appeared in sufficient quantities. Martyn Hilbert.
This shows 50455 facing 50507 at NH on 3/2/80. Despite it looking as if the two vehicles are cannibalised and about to be scrapped, both vehicles returned to traffic for several more years. Jerry Glover.

A scene during the tenure of BRCW Class 104 dmus at Norwich. The first BRCW sets arrived from Neville Hill in October 1975 and some were in poor condition compared with the Metro-Cammell sets which they replaced. At their most prolific, there were 9 x 3 car sets and 5 twin units. Eventually refurbished Metro Cammell sets replaced them from 1980 onwards, the last BRCW cars soldiering on until 1982. The twin sets were often hybrids paired with Cravens Class 105 cars. On 5th March 1980, Set 55 led by BRCW car E56189 and paired with Cravens power car E51255 is ready to depart with the 12.45 to Yarmouth. This unit continued in the diagram operating the 13.50 Yarmouth - Norwich, 14.33 Norwich - Ely, 17.24 Ely - Cambridge and 17.51 Cambridge - Stamford. On the right are BRCW set 77 E56188 + E50594 and behind it set 79 comprising cars E50597 + E56187. Gerard Fletcher.

This is set 86 comprising E50590, E59221 and at the rear out of frame E50583. The train is the 17.23 Peterborough - Norwich of Friday 28th March 1980 which was pretty much an all stations affair I seem to recall. It is seen arriving at a rather wet March station. Gerard Fletcher.

Two Class 104 DMU three-car sets are seen passing Blackpool North No.1 Signal Box en-route from Blackpool North to Manchester Victoria on Sunday 14 September 1980. Blackpool North carriage sidings adjacent to Enfield Road are in the background, with another four Class 104 sets visible. Ian 10B.
Three car BRCW dmu sets were allocated to Norwich for the first time in late 1975. All except one came from Hull Botanic Gardens and were replacements for Metro-Cammell sets which had been gathered by Norwich from 1968 onwards. The Class 104 sets were in pretty poor nick, but here's one which has had some TLC at Doncaster Works. Photographed on April 25th 1980 whilst working the 13.36 Peterborough - Cambridge service, E50578 ended up being part of the last three car set at Norwich. Most of them left in 1980, but this one lasted until February 1981 when it went to Stratford. Refurbished Metro-Cammell triples were their replacements. The BRCW units were numbered 80 - 88 and the refurbished Cammells commenced with set 90. Gerard Fletcher.
