This is set 86 comprising E50590, E59221 and at the rear out of frame E50583. The train is the 17.23 Peterborough - Norwich of Friday 28th March 1980 which was pretty much an all stations affair I seem to recall. It is seen arriving at a rather wet March station. Gerard Fletcher.

104 DMU

25th April 1980

Set: 80

Three car BRCW dmu sets were allocated to Norwich for the first time in late 1975. All except one came from Hull Botanic Gardens and were replacements for Metro-Cammell sets which had been gathered by Norwich from 1968 onwards. The Class 104 sets were in pretty poor nick, but here's one which has had some TLC at Doncaster Works. Photographed on April 25th 1980 whilst working the 13.36 Peterborough - Cambridge service, E50578 ended up being part of the last three car set at Norwich. Most of them left in 1980, but this one lasted until February 1981 when it went to Stratford. Refurbished Metro-Cammell triples were their replacements. The BRCW units were numbered 80 - 88 and the refurbished Cammells commenced with set 90. Gerard Fletcher.

104 DMU

26th May 1980

Following the end of the three day 'Rocket 150' cavalcade event at Rainhill on Monday evening May 26th 1980, the Army Cadets had been enlisted for the big clear up of the grandstands that had been erected alongside track, with the fruits of their endeavours in the black bin-liners visible at the base of the nearest grandstand. Despite the exotic motive power that had graced the event over the three days, one highlight that was generally ignored, was the spectacle of the frequent DMU shuttle services to and from Manchester Victoria that ran before and after the cavalcade. The shuttles utilised a mixed-bag of DMU's including some borrowed from other parts of the BR network. In this view, a six-car BRCW DMU formation made up of a pair of Buxton Depot three-car 104's, with Driving Motor Brake Second (DMBS) M50423 leading, was approaching Rainhill having run ECS from Manchester. Martyn Hilbert.

104 DMU

28th June 1980

The guard was looking back, as a well filled six-car Class 104 DMU, with Driving Motor Brake Second M50475 at the rear, was stood at Salwick with the 16.45 Blackpool North to Manchester Victoria service on June 28th 1980. The single island platform still retained its L&Y platform canopy in faded 1950's BR maroon & cream paint. The platform buildings at Salwick were demolished in the early 1970's, but the canopy remained until around 1990, and inevitably has since been replaced by a small shelter. Long grass had reclaimed where there was once a well-kept station garden. To the left of the DMU is the site of the former fast lines, removed in 1966. Martyn Hilbert.
