On 7th July 1985, coming out of the New Mills turn back tunnel, as we called it as it was used to turn back the 2 car dmus back to Manchester, is a Buxton "White Roofed" allocated BRC&W dmu BX482 (M53507, M59195, M53429), officially called Hayfield Tunnel it was the start of the 2.5 mile branch to Hayfield which closed to all traffic on 03/01/70, the tunnel is 197 yards long and was only half bricked up at the other end. Today the tunnel is trackless but the tunnel mouth is still there, at the other end of the tunnel is the start of the Sett Valley trail which is on the old track bed to Hayfield. Andrew J Crowther.

104 DMU

13th July 1985

The reason I took this at the time is because it was the only BRC&W vehicle, definitely in the Northwest, that still retained its original two-figure route indicator which necessitated the use of a tail lamp, as seen here. Seen leaving Manchester Victoria ECS after arrival from Liverpool, allocated to Newton Heath M53428 was withdrawn a few months later. 13th July 1985. Andrew J Crowther.

104 DMU

23rd July 1985

A BRCW Class 104 two-car DMU formed of cars M53524 & M53451 was passing over Farington Curve Junction with a well-filled late afternoon Preston to Ormskirk service on July 23rd 1985. The Newton Heath allocated set was a reform, with M53524 still wearing its white bodyside stripe from the days when it was part of a Manchester-Blackpool 'White Line' three-car set that included cars M59180 & M50472. M53524 was the last Class 104 car to retain the white stripe in service. The Newton Heath fleet of 'White Line' three-car 104's were a common sight in the 1970's along the busy Manchester Victoria to Blackpool North route which carried heavy commuter and leisure traffic. Six-car formations were the norm for weekday peak-time services and weekend workings in the Spring, Summer and Autumn. Martyn Hilbert.

Interior detail - this is the cab bulkhead on a Class 104 on July 23, 1985. Of note is the traffolyte sign above the sliding door reading "English Cedar" to show what type of veneer was used - although it seems a solid colour with no grain to be seen, so has it now been painted? Also note the covered up vent on the ceiling. Jonathan Hazan.

A Newton Heath allocated 2-car set waits with the 12.29 to Manchester Victoria at the single platform halt on 24 July 1985, 54176 closest. Adrian Nicholls.
