Having been on a Preston to Colne service, a two-car Class 104 DMU formed of cars M53465 & M53531 had been placed in the District Civil Engineers Sidings at Brownedge, just to the West of Bamber Bridge on June 22nd 1985. One of the wheelsets was located in a temporary skate, and was awaiting attention. The DMU is sat close to what was once Bamber Bridge Junction, and the 'road' alongside the 104 is on the site of the 1850 Preston Extension that ran from Bamber Bridge to Preston EL, via Todd Lane Junction that was abandoned in 1972. The unit is stabled on what had once been a loop between Brownedge Crossing and Bamber Bridge Junction. Dominating the skyline on the right of this scene is the former Bamber Bridge Spinning Company Mill complex. Martyn Hilbert.

Weary commuters are carried home on the 17.19 Preston to Ormskirk service, formed of a 2-Car Class 104, with MBS M53482 leading on June 25th 1985. It has just passed Midge Hall and the driver will have collected the single line token for the section to Rufford. During this period the former main line saw three different DMU sets working evening peak-time services along the line, in the days when the passing loop was fully utilised at Rufford. This vehicle met its demise following a serious collision with Class 47 47111 at Preston on January 18th 1986 while returning from Carlisle to Accrington with a football special, when brake failure caused the unit to run through a red signal and into the path of the 47 was stood at the South side of Preston Station. The 47 was subsequently scrapped, whilst the badly damaged M53482 was taken to Dock Street Sidings at Preston. The DMU car spent a considerable time there, sheeted over, before it was scrapped on site. Martyn Hilbert.
The passengers on the Poynton Parish Puffa were treated at Stratford-upon-Avon to a visit by the steam locomotive 46229 Duchess of Hamilton on 29 June 1985 although I don't recall taking any pictures of this. The return working of the steam special left a short while before the DMU (BX480, presumably 53474/59152/53420 and BX496, presumably 52062/59155/51947) went back to Cheshire and I photographed the latter from the window of the signal box. The industrial units in the background are the site of the erstwhile Stratford-upon-Avon shed and coaling stage. The entire backdrop is virtually unrecognisable nowadays and the signal box itself was demolished many years ago. Peter Tandy.

On 7th July 1985, coming out of the New Mills turn back tunnel, as we called it as it was used to turn back the 2 car dmus back to Manchester, is a Buxton "White Roofed" allocated BRC&W dmu BX482 (M53507, M59195, M53429), officially called Hayfield Tunnel it was the start of the 2.5 mile branch to Hayfield which closed to all traffic on 03/01/70, the tunnel is 197 yards long and was only half bricked up at the other end. The reason I took this at the time is because it was the only BRC&W vehicle, definitely in the Northwest, that still retained its original two-figure route indicator which necessitated the use of a tail lamp, as seen here. Seen leaving Manchester Victoria ECS after arrival from Liverpool, allocated to Newton Heath M53428 was withdrawn a few months later. 13th July 1985. Andrew J Crowther.
