After bashing Peaks over the Pennines, and sampling the ale in Stalybridge station bar I took the opportunity to photograph the little-recorded local DMU service to Stockport on 9 August 1986. The 19:18 service was being operated by a tired looking Class 104 B.R.C. & W. DMU 53451 + 53518, seen in the bay platform 3, bathed in the late afternoon sunshine, with the hills in the distance. I made a number of tape recordings to capture the railway scene of the time and you canexperience the audio magic of this vintage DMU making its characteristic sounds. Seen at Oban on 11/08/1986, 104325 consisted of vehicles SC53424 + SC53434 and was painted in this so-called "Mexican Bean" livery of maroon and white for use on the Oban - Crianlarich summer shuttle services. It was often attached to the rear of a loco-hauled service to be taken back to its home depot of Eastfield (ED), Glasgow, for servicing / refueling. BRCW Class 104 DMBS 53598 is the trailing power car in mixed Set 455 seen here leaving Prestwick station in August 1986. The wires are in place for the Ayrshire electrification which would go live the following month. The centre car is a Metro-Cammel vehicle (59090). A typically mixed set in the final fling of the DMU in Scotland. Andrew McConnell.

A two-car Class 104 DMU (M53499/M53470) was leading a pair of Class 108's on a six-car Blackpool North to Manchester Victoria service, departing from Chorley on August 30th 1986. Martyn Hilbert.

Class 104 DMCL no 53491 in plain blue leads blue / grey class 101 (presumably 59559) and 53705 (class 120) in platform 1 of Ayr station on 30-08-1986. This is typical of the 'Frankenstein' dmu sets that were put together in the 1980's immediately prior to the start of electric services, four weeks after this picture was taken. Gordon Thomson.
