Intending passengers head towards Class 104 Motor Brake Second M53451, stood at Burscough Bridge with a Southport to Manchester Victoria service on April 26th 1986. On the very same day the World had woken up to the news that in the former Soviet Union (Now part of Ukraine), the Chernobyl Nuclear Power Plant disaster was unfolding that would rapidly see radioactive particles spread in the air across much of Europe. This photo is a bit of a mystery to me. It was taken on either Friday 9 or Saturday 10 May 1986. The two-car DMU is showing "Special" on the destination board, and I have no idea of its originating point or destination. DMU workings were very rare at Wellingborough at this time, although they became a bit more common once Corby station was re-opened a year or two later. Would anyone have any suggestions as to what this working was? Lewis Bevan.

On the bright morning of May 1st 1986, A Class 104 Three-Car DMU (Buxton set BX482) with 53507 leading, was stood on the up fast at Leyland with a Blackpool North to Manchester Victoria Service. This was a familiar time-honoured scene, the class 104's dominating these services during the 1970's & early 1980's, until ousted by Class 120 Cross-Country units for a short time, prior to the arrival of new Class 150/2 Sprinter Units in 1987/88. Note the unusual application of yellow around the destination blind. Martyn Hilbert.

In time-honoured fashion, a three-car Class 104 DMU, with Driving Motor Second Lavatory M53556 at the rear, was stood on the Down Fast at Leyland station with a Manchester Victoria to Blackpool North service on May 16th 1986. M53556 was originally fitted with a First Class saloon, located behind the cab, but by 1986 had been downgraded to Second, although the better seats remained. Martyn Hilbert.
