Graffiti covered BRC&W Class 104 Driving Motor Brake Second (DMBS) M53453 in a derelict state inside Old Oak Common carriage shed circa 1988. It had been in a collision with a Class 31 at Gospel Oak in April 1987. Chris McKee.

One day in 1988, a Lancaster-Barrow dmu failed and was hauled by 31141. This image shows the Barrow bound train waiting to leave Grange over Sands and shows the leading coach to be class 104 DMSL M53501 which was based at Newton Heath from May 1987 until withdrawal in March 1989. 31141 was a Bescot engine from November 1987 until November 1988 when it moved to Crewe, then withdrawn in January 1989. Having climbed the gradient from Farington Curve Junction on the WCML, a two-car Class 104/108 hybrid DMU formed of cars M53501 & M53934 was passing Lodge Lane Crossing on Farington Moss with a lunchtime Preston to Ormskirk service on January 7th 1988. In the foreground is the part dismantled former Up Line that was taken out of use in 1983, prior to which double track had been retained from Farington Curve Junction to Midge Hall. The DMU is passing through the site of the one-time Moss Lane Junction, where until 1972 there was a direct link from the Ormskirk route that connected with the East Lancashire line at the top of Farington Curve. A two-car Class 104 DMU formed of cars M53421 & M53529, was heading over Farington Moss on its way towards Midge Hall with a Preston to Ormskirk service on January 14th 1988. As a nod to its past life at Buxton Depot, the Driving Motor Brake Second M53421 had received a customised white cab roof. Alongside the unit are remnants of the former Up Line that was taken out of use in 1983, and removed piecemeal from Farington Curve Junction to Midge Hall until the early 1990's. Martyn Hilbert.

Blue & Grey livered Class 104 DMBS M53534 with blue M53507 brings up the rear of a formation also containing a Class 108/104 hybrid set on a Manchester Victoria to Blackpool North service at Preston on February 6th 1988. Now this is a rare bird, out of the 302 BRC&W class 104 units to be built, this is one of only 15 DTCL's to be built. M56182 is also the only one to survive into preservation, because of its second role in life in the departmental fleet as Buxton allocated Sandite unit ADB977554.Seen at Buxton on the 14th February 1988.
