On a warm summer evening at Appley Bridge in 1981 a 2-car Class 108 arrives with the 18:58 departure for Manchester Victoria (the 18:26 from Southport), as a 3-car Class 104 pulls away with the 18:56 departure for Southport (the 16:35 from Leeds). Three pairs of trains operated each day between Leeds and Southport, and were the only services on the line to offer first class accommodation at the time. S Gaskell.
