The view from the Hexham station footbridge looking west on 4 August 1981. The dmu is a Cravens 2-car set of Class 105, made up of cars 56464/51279. From memory I think it has arrived on a service from Newcastle and is about set back over the crossover into the eastbound platform to form the 13.10 back to Newcastle Central. Note the wagons being filled with sand on the right of my pic, and Hexham signal box on the gantry in the background. The box is Grade II-listed and of NER origin. Lewis Bevan.

56125 is on the rear of set 49 when seen at Yarmouth on the 21st August 1981. Chris Lings.
An unidentified Norwich allocated Cravens class 105 dmu set 39, departs platform 4 at Norwich, with a service to Great Yarmouth on the Norfolk coast, 26th August 1981. Andrew J Crowther.

Class 105 DMU set 57 (56458 + 51263) approaches Oulton Broad North on a Norwich - Lowestoft service on 29 August 1981. Stuart Mackay Collection.

Ipswich and Cravens Class 105 E51271 + E56125 forming Norwich set no. 49. The train is the 06.58 Leicester to Harwich Parkeston Quay which I'd travelled on from March on 9/9/81. Later in the day this unit was seen forming the 14.50 Ipswich to Stamford service. Some late 70s fashion still in evidence here, even if it is 1981. Gerard Fletcher.
It's funny how you can curse things, but then years later find that they add a strange charm to a photograph. I'm not sure which is the most rateable here, the Cravens or the classic pushchair? The occupant of the latter if favoured with longevity must be over 30 now! This is Norwich set 59, E56114 + E51258 simmering at Ipswich before departure as the 10.48 to Lowestoft via the East Suffolk line. 9/9/81. Gerard Fletcher.
Many people disliked the Cravens Class 105s intensely because of their noisy ride. To me this just added to the 'experience'. To get a Cravens twin with the needle off the clock (over 70mph) was exhilarating to say the least and also quite commonplace. Here Norwich set no. 47 (E51295 + E56429) awaits its next duty on September 9th 1981. Gerard Fletcher.
Cravens Class 105 Set no. 66, E51260 leading E56413 departing Norwich on 9th September 1981 as the 12.05 to Sheringham. The diagrams for these units involved considerable distances and on this date set 66 worked the 11.04 Yarmouth - Norwich, 12.05 to Sheringham and back followed by the 16.45 Norwich - Peterborough and 19.15 Peterborough - Cambridge. Gerard Fletcher.
Norwich was always swarming with the busy little Cravens Class 105 dmus in the 70s & 80s. Resting between duties here is Set 43, E51297 + E56439. The old twin headcode box has been plated over which was unusual and note yet another Cravens reflected in the windows! The destination blind shows Ipswich, but strangely there was only a single dmu working along the main line through Diss at this time. This was the 17.15 Norwich - Ipswich all stations which was scheduled to run just behind a London service. 9/9/81. Gerard Fletcher.
On September 12, 1981, E51301 + E56464 depart Darlington with the 11:55 to Hartlepool. Until the mid 1980s there was an hourly service between Darlington and Hartlepool which used to carry a lot of students to Stockton and Billingham tech near Billingham station. Due the shortage of trains with the shortcomings of the new Pacers, the Hartlepool service was replaced by buses. The service was never reinstated apart from a token two trains each way on a Sunday. John Carter.

There was little over one year to go for the passenger services on the GN-GE joint line from March when 'hybrid' Birmingham R.C.W-Cravens unit E50595-E56139 was forming a March to Spalding service at Whitemoor Junction on 28 September 1981. The line was closed on 27th November 1982 and lifted a few years later. Gordon Edgar.
Following a heavy shower, the sun just reappears as a Cravens Class 105 2-Car set with M50815 leading, prepares to depart from Bamber Bridge with the 09.46 Colne to Preston service on September 28th 1981. This was a time-honoured scene, the Cravens Power-Twin units dominated the routes in East Lancashire from the mid 1960's after they were transferred from the East Midlands where they had worked as three-car sets with a centre trailer coach. Martyn Hilbert.
At York station on 30 September 1981 are 08197 (Rowntrees-Dringhouses trip) and E51296 + 56431 (Scarborough-Sheffield). John Carter.
