Nuneaton Abbey station looks a little bleak on a cloudy 14th September 1959. The station was located on Midland Road and served the housing estates rather than the town centre. Behind the station is the large Judkins Quarry complex this supplied the area with a constant film of dust which covered everything in the immediate vicinity. The opposite platform has a water crane still in use the station closed to passengers 4th March 1968. Approaching the station is an LMR 3 car Cravens unit on a Nottingham - Birmingham working. One of a series of images credited to the LMR Mechanical & Electrical Engineers Department at Derby recording the aftermath of the collision on Singleton Bank (near Weeton) where a six-car DMU excursion struck the rear of a stationary ballast train on 16 July 1961. This is image 21, captioned "Debris on bank side down main line." The DMU bogie in the centre will be off one of the first two vehicles (50783 or 50808), the final drive is on the left axle with part of the cardan shaft attached. British Railways.
