Class 105 DMU Matlock Derbyshire 14th March 1979. The Midland Railway's main line through Monsal Dale to Manchester & Buxton closed beyond Matlock in 1967 leaving a shuttle service between Derby & Matlock. This continues today but in 1979 the station looked smarter and the Craven's diesel multiple unit older than today. Riber Castle looks down from the hilltop, a constant feature in a much changed railway scene. The Down line was lifted and the goods yard abandoned. There used to be a covered footbridge - I remember crossing it in 1965 to catch a train to Bakewell - but with the closing of the Down platform it and the 1850 platform buildings were demolished. The rail was relaid & the heritage Peak Rail steam services to Rowsley now run from platform 2 again. Pete LG99.

The driver/guard is moving the red lamp to the rear of the Cravens set at Matlock for the return journey on 14th March 1979. A Cravens DMU after arriving at Silvertown station, next stop North Woolwich. 26 April 1979. The platform buildings have recently been demolished and new ones are appearing in their place. Although electrified in May 1985, the line closed in December 2006. The Tate & Lyle sugar processing facility dominates the scene at the right. Kevin Lane.

In the 1970's a ride on one of these was something to be avoided, rattles, the smell of diesel and noise from the underfloor engines all adding to the experience. Now 30 years on, having suffered Class 142s, a ride on a Cravens DMU would be quite luxurious. On May 6th 1979, a two-car set (the DMBS furthest is believed to be M50784) at Morecambe Promenade station with a departure to Preston. The former Midland Railway station here was closed in 1994, despite its Seafront location. The 'new' Morecambe Station is now sited nearer the town centre. Martyn Hilbert.

A set formed of a Class 105 power car in plain blue, a Met-Camm TS in refurbished livery, and a Class 101 DMBS in blue / grey livery, waits to leave North Berwick for Edinburgh Waverley on 10/9/1979. At this time, the service was sparse but since electrification it has a frequent interval flow. Stephen Burdett.
