In dismal weather the 10.57 Cambridge - Doncaster DMU does a little trade at Spalding on Thursday October 21st 1982. This was just over a month before the end of the joint line from March by which route it had travelled. Norwich Cravens twin unit set no. 46 has E51273 leading E56123. The power car had spent over 18 years on the GN Suburban services before being sent to Norwich in early 1978. It was withdrawn in November 1984 and met its end at Snailwell in 1986. The unit at the rear is the departmental 'Stourton Saloon' by this time numbered ADB975664 & ADB975637. Gerard Fletcher.

Set 46 E54463 + E53369 passing Kiln Lane near Ely on a Peterborough to Cambridge working. Seen at 12.35pm I only noticed this pair 3 times in late July early August as 54463 was shortly withdrawn. Nicholas Youngman.

Many people disliked the Cravens Class 105s intensely because of their noisy ride. To me this just added to the 'experience'. To get a Cravens twin with the needle off the clock (over 70mph) was exhilarating to say the least and also quite commonplace. Here Norwich set no. 47 (E51295 + E56429) awaits its next duty on September 9th 1981. Gerard Fletcher.
This is a view of the Norwich skyline taken from Lower Clarence Road car park. It is Easter Saturday, April 2nd 1983 and the Jubilee Sidings are brimming with dmus as usual. The nearest vehicle is Cravens trailer no. E56135 which is partnering E51295 as set no. 47. Gerard Fletcher.
The crew change ends at Spalding, they will depart with the 13:05 service to Peterborough, 23 July 1977. So what has happened around the destination blind on E56448? My guess is that it was leaking and an attempt was made to seal it with a water based sealant, which was then out in the rain at speed before it had properly set. A Class 105 Cravens 2-car diesel unit is seen departing Manningtree bound for Harwich on 24 March 1984. The set number appears to be 48 so the carriages may have been E54470 (leading) and E51291 which were new in 1959 and 1958 respectively. Both of these would be withdrawn a few months after the photo was taken. New signals have been put in place on a tall gantry, in readiness for electrification of the line which was more obviously under way a couple of miles towards London. Jeremy Chapter.
Cravens DMU set 49 in Colchester station with a Norwich service, circa early/mid-1980s. Mike Bunker.
Cravens DMU set 49 (E56436 + E50365) head through the fens north of Postland GN & GE with a Cambridge to Doncaster passenger service on 02.05.77. Phil Bevan.
Bardney station in Lincolnshire was only open for occasional sugar beet traffic by 1980. On 6 September of that year, the Fakenham & Dereham Railway Society ran a railtour which visited the branch. Another railtour in February 1981 was the last passenger train to reach this point where passenger trains had been withdrawn in 1970. Car 51271 is nearest the camera, other vehicles included 56116, 51256 and 56125. Jeremy Chapter.

The 12:29 to Norwich awaiting departure from Lowestoft station on 7 July 1981. It is formed of 56125 + 51271 (set 49) and 56188 + 51270. Stuart Mackay Collection.

Ipswich and Cravens Class 105 E51271 + E56125 forming Norwich set no. 49. The train is the 06.58 Leicester to Harwich Parkeston Quay which I'd travelled on from March on 9/9/81. Later in the day this unit was seen forming the 14.50 Ipswich to Stamford service. Some late 70s fashion still in evidence here, even if it is 1981. Gerard Fletcher.
