108 DMU

1959

Blue Square Derby Lightweight (Class 108) vehicles under construction in Derby Works - from BTC 'Transport Age' magazine, 1959. Alloy bodyside panels are being welded in the foreground. The two vehicles have their sides still in unpainted alloy, the steel cab front is in red oxide primer - the alloy frames of the windscreens still unpainted. The cab roof domes are made in white glassfibre. Scan courtesy of Mike Ashworth. British Railways.

circa 1959

A new Blue Square Derby Lightweight (later known as a Class 108) at Derby Works - from BTC 'Transport Age' magazine, 1959. It is formed from two DMCL vehicles - possibly destined to become an ER four-car set? Sets in the Works were used for diesel driver training - could the staff by the cab be on such a course, the instructor having a clipboard? Behind is a Yellow Diamond Derby Lightweight. Scan courtesy of Mike Ashworth. British Railways.

108 DMU

1959

A (Blue Square) Derby Lightweight DMU at Amlwch Station in 1959 by Derek Chaplin. The branch to Amlwch has been the focus for a preserved line for a long time. The passenger service to Amlwch closed in 1964. In 1959 Derek Chaplin accompanied BBC broadcaster Wynford Vaughan Thomas making a radio broadcast catching trains only from Cardiff to North Wales and calling in on both the embryonic Talyllyn and Ffestiniog railways. Subsequently, Derek made up a 35mm slide show called " Trains of Wales 1959" which he showed at railway societies. These 137 mainly Kodachrome slides have been found by his family preserved in a dry wooden storage box and I am privileged to scan them for people to see again. The notes on each slide are minimalist and with no actual dates so anybody who can add interesting information is appreciated. Peter Brabham Collection.

108 DMU

1959

A 2-car Class 108 DMU in lined green livery sits at Banbury Merton Street station with a service to Buckingham. The station had lost it's overall roof in the 1950's and it remained open to passengers until 1961. The site of the station is now a housing estate, although the portion of dock for the siding to the right of the DMU remained in situ until the housing estate was built in 2005. David Lawrence.

108 DMU

circa February 1959

An official image (Derby Works negative 59/54) of a two-car Derby Lightweight (blue square) posed on the Wirksworth branch, circa February 1959. The vehicles are DMBS M50629 and DTCL M56215. They would initially be stored at Chaddesden Sidings 'pending allocation', then transferred to Newton Heath in June 1959 to begin their working life. British Railways.

27th March 1959

A two-car (blue square) Derby Lightweight and a two-car BRC&W form the 1.18pm Macclesfield Central - Manchester London Road service approaching Prestbury on 27 March 1959. A Met-Camm DMU is heading in the opposite direction on the left. Michael Mensing.

108 DMU

spring 1959

A Derby Works image (negative 59/240) showing the cab of one of their units, I'm guessing a Class 108. Taken circa spring 1959, the cab shows signs of use so it does not seem to be a new vehicle. Image courtesy of Diesel Unit Preservation Associates. British Railways.

108 DMU

circa Summer 1959

A Class 108 seen at Chester Northgate just after arrival from Manchester Central via the CLC. This is most likely summer 1959; Northgate station still has an overall roof over platform 2, (and a steam train for Shotton or Wrexham is in it), and this was removed early in 1960. David Faircloth.

108 DMU

September 1959

A Derby twin set led by M56258 (presumably with M50975) is seen working an ECS coming off the Aston line at Stechford in September 1959. Michael Mensing.

108 DMU

4th January 1960

M51562, the 1000th diesel railcar built by Derby Works, seen in Chester Northgate on 4 January 1960. It was an a New Brighton train, this was the first day of DMUs on the services, and unusually it sits in platform 1 at Northgate normally only used by services over the CLC to Manchester Central. David Faircloth.

108 DMU

4th January 1960

Adorned as the 1,000 railcar built (by Derby), M51562 is seen here on its first day of passenger service - 4 January 1960 working a New Brighton service at Blacon on the day DMUs took over the line. David Faircloth.

108 DMU

circa February 1960

An official image (Derby Works negative 60/53) showing a new (blue square) Derby Lightweight set in the yard at Derby Works. The DMBS is M51416, its partner is presumably M56271, the pair were delivered new to Ryecroft depot in February 1960. British Railways.

108 DMU

February 1960

M51417 was a BR Derby works built Class 108, this unit, which is obviously brand new, went to Walsall (3C Rycroft depot) 20/02/1960, delivered with M56272. It was withdrawn from Longsight 09/06/1992 and scrapped at Gwent Demolition, Margam. The picture was taken on the LNWR side of New Street, the Midland side still had the overall roof but this on side the roof was considered too badly damaged in the war and was demolished. Just behind the unit is the connecting foot bridge which ran from the Stephenson Street, through the Queens Hotel building (right) over Queens Drive, which divided the Midland and LNWR sides, and exited onto Station Street. The bridge had been open when both sides had their roofs but clearly this side had to have roof and BR provided the minimum they could get away with, the rather nasty corrugated asbestos roof seen here.
