24th February 1985

Permanent way work at the once 4 tracked Buxworth cutting, just south of New Mills South Junc on the Hope Valley line, sees 37079 (D6779) stationary on a ballast train, whilst a class 108 comes past wrong line with a local service to Sheffield. on today's railway this would mean Rail Replacement buses. 24th February 1985. An unidentified class 47 reverses its excursion train out of the sidings at Spalding at the end of the annual Flower Parade day, on it's right is an 8 car class 101 dmu, our 'Merrymaker' from Furness Vale is on the left made up of a 2 car class 108 and 2x3 car class 104 dmu's whilst on top of that is another loco hauled excursion with a class 47 on it. 4th May 1985. It looks as if you can park you car, coach, mini bus and your 3 car class 108 dmu outside the front of Spalding railway station, on the occasion is the annual Flower Parade day. Looking at Google Maps this has all changed with a road across here now but the station buildings haven't changed, and there is my mum there most likely reading that months 'Flower Monthly'. 4th May 1985 Andrew J Crowther.

Reversing into the sidings for the day at Spalding is our 'Merrymaker' from Furness Vale, made up of a 2 car class 108 and 2x3 car class 104 dmu's and here for the annual Flower Parade day. The class 100 dmu in the siding is the Eastern Region General Manager's saloon ADB975664 and ADB975637. 4th May 1985 Andrew J Crowther.

A ten car 'Merrymaker' heads towards Sheffield having just crossed the freight only Chapel Milton viaduct, is captured joining the Hope Valley route at Chinley East Junc. Back in the days when Shrewsbury had a very active night shift with numerous van trains and postal services seeing as it was the interchange between several principle routes. Having arrived with 2H40 the 15.26 from Greenbank this Derby Lightweight class 108 DMU set is seen in the London Road platforms at Manchester Piccadilly on 16 June 1985. The driver is changing ends swiftly before working the set away a few minutes late as 2D45 the 16.25 to Chester. Adrian Nicholls.

An unidentified Derby built class 108 dmu rolls into New Mills Central with a local train from Sheffield, 7th July 1985. In the New Mills turn back tunnel, as we called it as it was used to turn back the 2 car dmus back to Manchester, is Buxton "White Roofed" allocated BRC&W dmu BX482. Andrew J Crowther.

Two unidentified Buxton "White Roofed" allocated Derby built class 108 dmu's leave New Mills Central, with a 6 car Summer Sunday only Peak Rail Rambler service to Buxton, this working was normally in the hands of a 3 car unit. 7th July 1985. Just about in view is the New Mills turn back tunnel, as we called it as it was used to turn back the 2 car dmus back to Manchester, is Buxton "White Roofed" allocated BRC&W dmu BX482. Passing New Mills South Junction signal box (still open June 2016), as seen from a Buxton allocated Derby built class 108 dmu, operating the Summer Sunday only Buxton-New Mills Cental-Buxton Peak Rail Rambler service. The three chimneys in the centre of the photo mark the the spot of the world famous sweet manufacturer and New Mills based Swizzels Matlow, whose brands include, which i'm sure we've all had, "Dumsticks", "Refreshers" and "Love Hearts" to name a few. 7th July 1985.
