With the former Jubilee Mill in the background, Class 108 set LO296 (53956 & 54238) departs from Croston whilst working the 15.08 Ormskirk to Preston on May 16th 1992. Once a familiar sight on these services, this was probably the last visit of a Derby built class 108 to the line. In the intervening years Jubilee Mill has been demolished and a housing development now covers the site. Martyn Hilbert.
With Midge Hall in the far distance, a Class 108 two-car DMU formed of cars 53956 & 54238, was passing the Oil Seed Rape at Cocker Bar with the 16.03 Preston to Ormskirk service on May 16th 1992. Martyn Hilbert.
Standing-in for a failed Class 142 Pacer, the old order returned to the Ormskirk line for possibly the last time on May 16th 1992. A scabby looking Class 108 formed of cars 53956 & 54238 (LO296) was passing through the long-closed platforms at Midge Hall whilst working the 12.23 Preston to Ormskirk service. Martyn Hilbert.
Substituting for the non-availablity of a class 142, a Class 108 2-Car DMU returned to its old stamping ground on 16th May 1992. With car 54238 leading, 53956 behing, the 08.21 Ormskirk to Preston Service has just returned the single-line token at Midge Hall signalbox. The unit is about to pass through the derelict platforms of the former station, closed in 1961. This was possibly the last occasion when a Class 108 worked along here - possibly also the last visit of a first generation DMU. Martyn Hilbert.
On possibly the last occasion that a first generation DMU worked along the Preston to Ormskirk line, a Class 108 with car 54238 trailing and DMBS 53956 leading has just collected the token from the signalman at Midge Hall, whilst working from Preston to Ormskirk on May 16th 1992. The unit was deputising for a failed Class 142 Pacer. Martyn Hilbert.
Deputising for a failed Class 142 Pacer, the old order is restored probably for the last time on May 16th 1992, as a worn-looking Class 108 was working the Preston to Ormskirk services. Set LO296 formed of cars 54238 & 53956 is seen here approaching the token exchange at Midge Hall with the 09.38 Ormskirk to Preston. In the foreground are the remains of the pointwork where the double line, kept in use from Farington Curve Junction to Midge Hall until 1983, ended. The turnout onto the single line had by this date been replaced with plain rail. The worn-out disused line back towards Farington was kept in-situ for a number of years but was progressively recovered between 1988 & 1992. Martyn Hilbert.
53958 + 54239 set LO297 arrive at Manchester Piccadilly, February 6, 1992. Nicholas Youngman.
A Class 108 (sel LO297, presumably 53958 + 54239) and a Class 101 at Birkett Common in September 1992. George Woods.
Old and new at a wet Manchester Victoria on October 17th 1991. The two-car Class 108 formed of cars 54247 & 53964, had been given a retro BR Green livery in 1986 whilst based at Carlisle Kingmoor, and was initially used on the Settle - Carlisle line. The unit was eventually transferred to Chester Depot, then became Longsight set LO298. Alongside was 142030 on a service to Wigan Wallgate. Martyn Hilbert.
With just two days to go before Christmas, and in very poor light, a work worn 2-Car Class 108 in retro BR green livery formed of cars M54247 & M53964, was stood at the small single track terminus at Rose Hill Marple with a service to Manchester Piccadilly on December 23rd 1991. The set had once been a long-term resident of Carlisle Kingmoor Depot and was one of the regular 108's used on the Cumbrian Coast Line, complete with window bars on the droplights due to restricted clearances on the Coast Line between Carlisle and Maryport. In 1986, the set was returned to a retro BR green style livery and was used regularly on the Settle to Carlisle route. The set subsequently had spells allocated to Heaton, Neville Hill and Chester, finally being transferred to Longsight in the latter part of 1991. The set was withdrawn from service in July 1992 and scrapped by Booth's of Rotherham in 1993. Martyn Hilbert.
On platform 1 in the Manchester Piccadilly of old that looked quite run-down, two days before Christmas on December 23rd 1991, Green liveried Class 108 54247 & 53964 which was being used for services to Marple Rose Hill, was sharing platform space with a Strathclyde Class 101 that was forming a working to Marple, the car just visible was 53160. The ex-Strathclyde orange liveried Class 101's kept their bright livery as it was a close match for the Greater Manchester PTE colours carried by Class 142's 142001-142014 and most of the local bus fleet. Just appearing on the left is 158754 which was then a two-car unit. Martyn Hilbert.

Two 1959 Derby built class 108 DMU's now Longsight allocated, 53958 (still with its Heaton allocation sticker) part of LO297 and green liveried LO298 (53964 + 54247) stands in Manchester Piccadilly's platform 11, since this photo was taken the trackless platform on the right has been reinstated and is now platform 12. 24th December 1991. Andrew J Crowther.

Hybrid Class 108/108/101 unit LO349 (51927 + 59388 + 51496) at Manchester Piccadilly, 9/5/90. Sparegang.
Stratford-upon-Avon used to see a lot of day excursion traffic. This time exposure shows Longsight allocated LO350 (presumably 51935/59388/51927) + LO349 standing in platform 2 awaiting departure time before returning to Blackpool on 3 February 1990. For those interested, the exposure on 100asa transparency film was 12 seconds at f8. I always took several exposures when shooting after dark to try and ensure that there would be at least one with the correct light and shadow balance. It's much easier (and cheaper) with digital hardware! Peter Tandy.
DMU set LO603 (53968+53243) is seen pulling out of Tal-y-cafn station on the Conway Valley line with the 10.25 Llandudno to Blaenau Ffestiniog on May 4, 1992. By this date the first generation DMU's were in the twilight of their careers and the leading vehicle here 53968 was withdrawn two months later on July 2nd with the trailing vehicle 54243 making it to October 1992. Adrian Nicholls.
