A (later) Derby Lightweight (M56484, set LT330) and a Cravens set sit in New Mills Central Station Derbyshire in August 1969. This photo looking northwest towards Manchester was taken from the classic GCR latticed footbridge. The station was the junction for the Midland Railway line to New Mills from Millers Dale via Chinley and the Hope Valley line to Sheffield. I had travelled on the soon-to-be-closed branch line to Hayfield & was now waiting for my connection back to Sheffield. By this time the Midland line beyond Millers Dale to Derby was closed. The dmu in the Down platform seemed to be stabled there for quite a while before heading back to Manchester Piccadilly. Pete LG99.

Class 108 DMU set LT330 departs from Manchester Central. It has Chester on the destination blind and looks like a Class 100 on the rear. The date was recorded as 6 August 1969 yet the station is listed as having closed in early May 1969. Harvey Scowcroft / Nigel Valentine Collection.
A 2 car Derby Lightweight Newton Heath allocated Class 108 DMU, set N600 (M53934 + presumably M54268), nears its destination whilst working a Manchester Piccadilly - New Mills Central service. Taken from where a public footpath crosses the line on the 9th July 1988. Andrew J Crowther.
At 8.28pm towards the end of a fine Summer evening with the sun setting in the West, an eight-car DMU forming a Carlisle to Preston 'Dalesrail' service was stood at Bamber Bridge on August 7th 1988. With the rear of the train standing on the level crossing, the driver was looking back along the train. The formation was M54268 & M53934, M53334 & M51206, M53492 & M53439, M53948 & M53944. Class 108 53970, set number N602 presumably with 54264, is seen stabled at Tyseley on 16.07.1988. It was allocated to Newton Heath at the time and was probably down to use the wheel lathe. Andy Cole.
On a cold Winter evening, a Class 108 two-car DMU formed of DMBS M53970 & DTSL M56264 was stood in platform 6 at Preston with a Barrow-In-Furness service on February 18th 1989. The 108's were once synonomous with the Cumbrian Coast route, a large allocation being once based at Carlisle that had bars fitted over the door droplights due to restricted clearances on the Maryport to Carlisle section of the route. Martyn Hilbert.
A well filled two-car Class 108 (Newton Heath Depot set N604), formed of cars M53974 & M54503 was stood on the Up Slow at Leyland station with a tea-time Blackpool North to Manchester Victoria service on August 16th 1988. Martyn Hilbert.
A Derby Class 108 two-car DMU formed of cars M54258 & M53975 (N605) was passing the Cocker Bar at Ulnes Walton whilst running through the West Lancashire countryside between Midge Hall and Croston with a Preston to Ormskirk service on April 25th 1989. A three-car Class 108 formed of three brake vehicles including a centre trailer coach (TBSL), was awaiting departure from Skipton with a service to Bradford Forster Square on January 5th 1991. The leading car was M53943 and the rear driving car was M53971. It would appear this was a cobbled together set of serviceable cars in the period when the troublesome Class 142 fleet was giving the first generation DMU fleet an extended period of operation. M53943 was carrying the set number N607 on the cab front, whilst at the rear, M53971 was displaying set number T203. Martyn Hilbert.
DTS(L) M54261 (presumably with M53978) leads a four-car formation calling at Kent's Bank (Cumbria) with the 12:07 Lancaster-Barrow, 11/6/88. The Class 108s allocated to Carlisle Kingmoor (KD) depot were the mainstay of local services in Cumbria and North Lancashire for many years. In May 1988, shortly before this image was taken, KD closed, and the fleet was split between Heaton (HT) depot at Newcastle for Cumbian Coast / Windermere routes, and Chester (CH) for north Lancashire routes, such as the service illustrated. Graeme Phillips Collection.
Class 108 Driving Trailer Second Lavatory (DTSL) car M54261 was leading the eight-car Blackpool North to Carlisle Sunday Dalesrail service, passing Lostock Hall Junction on September 7th 1988. The service was made up of three pairs of Class 108's with a Class 104 bringing up the rear. Martyn Hilbert.
