Newton Heath based NH132 (52062 + 50778) were part of the formation working the LCGB Manchester Terminals Farewell tour on 3/May/1969. The tour stopped as follows: Manchester Exchange, Kenyon Junction, Manchester Piccadilly, Stockport Edgeley, Northenden Junction, Cheadle Heath South Junction, Buxton No.1, Buxton LNW, Briggs Sidings, Droylesden Junction, Stalybridge, Godley Junction, Glazebrook Junction, Cheadle Heath, Manchester Central, seen here with a 'photo-stop' at Stalybridge. For those who may be surprised at the headcode, 'X' was used for exceptional loads, out of gauge loads and Royal trains, 'Z' was used for inter-regional special workings and at the time on the Midland Region 'T' was used for internal special workings. Robert Chilton.
A two-car (blue square) Derby Lightweight power-twin DMU arrives into Wigan Wallgate. Date unknown, but the 3" numbers dates it to the first years of blue livery in the late 1960s, and the Newton Heath set number in the cab window (possibly NH147) means it was before the two vehicles (DMBS M51932 and DMS M52047) were transferred to Allerton in early October 1969. Graham Clark.
Complete with their tail lamps, A pair of Newton Heath allocated Class 108's stand in bay platforms 3A & 4A at the south end of Preston Station on March 18th 1974. The unit on the left was being used on services to Ormskirk, whilst the one the right was stabled, although if the destination blind is to be believed it has seen some recent use on the Windermere Branch. Class 108's were the norm on the Ormskirk services at the time. The 108 on the right has set number NH449 in the cab window (and another partially seen behind it), the 108 on the left has 'IL7' in the window - probably a partial headcode chalked on the reverse of a set number board, Martyn Hilbert.
Bit of a rusty rail manoeuvre here, the Cornish Railway Society's 'China Clay Rambler' railtour on 28 April 1990 formed of a 2 + 3-car class 108 DMU formation with set P828 (52051+59386+51936) leading here. The tour is seen in Gaverigan Tip Sidings, this short branch off the Newquay line was the one time Cornwall Mineral Railways Meledor Mill branch which left the Newquay line at St.Dennis Junction. By this date the sidings once used as a local ballast tip were largely out of use and are thought to have been disconnected from the Newquay branch and removed some time after 1991. Adrian Nicholls.
