108 DMU

26th July 1982

Class 108 DMSL 51562 stabled in the bay at Shrewsbury alongside 140001 which had arrived on the 05:44 from Swansea. 26 July 1982. I had left Neath at 05.06 to catch the 05.44 to Shrewsbury in order to ride on the experimental unit. My verdict on the ride was that this experiment was a failure and nothing would come of it. Wrong again! Robert Thomas.

108 DMU

27th July 1985

A two-car Class 108 with Driving Motor Second Lavatory (DMSL) M51565 leading, was accelerating away from Croston with the a Preston to Ormskirk service on July 27th 1985. The unit is passing the remains of the loading gauge at what was once the southern end of the goods yard at Croston, in the days when this route was the double track main line between Preston-Ormskirk-Liverpool Exchange. The loading gauge with its concrete post stood watch here for many years, but has now gone, new housing now comes right up to the railway boundary. Martyn Hilbert.

108 DMU

29th November 1986

Set: T072

A misty morning at Cosford on 29 November 1986 made the use of black & white film a better bet than Kodachrome 64. The subject is class 108 DMU T072 (51566 + 53933) complete with headlight and a red dragon emblem on the cab front. The train is about to stop at Cosford station with a Wolverhampton to Chester service stopping at all stations at least as far at Shrewsbury. Peter Tandy.

108 DMU

14th April 1991

Set: T072

Tyseley's class 108 set T072 didn't work only in the Birmingham and Chester areas. On 14 April 1991 51566 + 53933 were approaching Nottingham station when I photographed them a short way to the east of Lenton Junctions. Peter Tandy.

108 DMU

14th September 1991

Set: T072

The sunshine didn't last long at Cosford on 14 September 1991 and by the time that class 108 T072 (51566 + 53933) returned from Wolverhampton towards Chester the cloud and murk had returned allowing a shot from the north side of line thus giving a better view of the signals and other infrastructure. The wind sleeve in the background marks the site as being part of RAF Cosford, a training establishment and museum of many things aeronautical including an unfortunately static TSR2 experimental strike and reconnaissance aircraft, a victim of Governmental dogma. Peter Tandy.

108 DMU

17th July 1992

Set: T072

51566 with 53933 as Tyseley's set T072 stands at a busy Derby station on 17/Jul/1992. The set number is somewhat cobbled together with numerals of differing colours and 51566 still retains it's Welsh Dragon and headlight from it's time on the Central Wales Line. This set is one of several class 108s which entered preservation as a complete set, initially in this case at Peak Rail. Robert Chilton.

51567

108 DMU

7th June 1983

Set: 358

M51567, Sc59060 & M53926 at Dunfermline, Tuesday 7th June 1983, about to depart with the 19:47 Edinburgh Waverley – Cowdenbeath service. I considered this unusual during a visit to Scotland in June 1983, a 3 car DMU comprising two Class 108 motor cars (on loan from Chester) sandwiching a Metro Cammell trailer. What made it unusual was the centrally mounted headlamp on both motor cars which indicated that they had come from those sets so equipped to work the Central Wales Line. At this time the station nameboards simply read “Dunfermline” but the platform lamps confusingly still showed the station’s former name of “Dunfermline Lower”. Nowadays the station is known as “Dunfermline Town”. The local council, having devoted considerable energy in changing every road sign from “Town Centre” to “City Centre”, requested that the station be renamed “Dunfermline City”, which was abandoned as the cost pr Brian McDevitt.
