110 DMU

circa June 1979

An official image (7 of 14, negative Y796/3249/8) from a internal BR photo album recording the refurbishment of Class 110 DMUs. This view shows the padding fitted under the drivers desk. The small white label above the centre window tells is this is DMBC E51819, and was probably taken at its home depot of Bradford Hammerton Street circa mid-1979. British Rail.

circa June 1979

An official image (9 of 14, negative Y796/3249/9) from a internal BR photo album recording the refurbishment of Class 110 DMUs. This view shows the first class compartment in a DMBC, thought to be E51819. Probably taken at its home depot of Bradford Hammerton Street circa mid-1979. This first class saloon was non-smoking, the one in the DMCL was for the smokers. British Rail.

110 DMU

circa June 1979

An official image (10 of 14, negative Y796/3249/14) from a internal BR photo album recording the refurbishment of Class 110 DMUs. This view shows the rear half of a DMCL, thought to be E51832. Probably taken at its home depot of Bradford Hammerton Street circa mid-1979. This view would be very similar for a DMCL and a TSL. One difference (ignoring the floor hatch) is the seat layout in the centre saloon as the two and three seaters are switched. If this was the TSL for the row of seats closest to the camera the three seater would be on the left. British Rail.

110 DMU

circa June 1979

An official image (13 of 14, negative Y796/3249/12) from a internal BR photo album recording the refurbishment of Class 110 DMUs. This view shows the rear saloon in a TSL, thought to be E59811. Probably taken at its home depot of Bradford Hammerton Street circa mid-1979. While the original tungsten main saloon lighting has been replaced by fluorescents, the small 'bulls eye' tungsten lighting remains on the lowered (to hold a water tank above) ceiling outside the toilet. Compare this view with the 10th image in the album and the placement of the centre lights is different, and the formica in the bulkhead facing us is split in two on this vehicle. British Rail.

110 DMU

23rd June 1979

For many years there was a Summer Saturday dated Castleford to Blackpool North working that went out-and-back in a day. Once the preserve of an Eastern Region Class 40, by June 23rd 1979 when this image was recorded at Blackburn of the return working from Blackpool, the service was provided by DMU sets, on this particular day formed of ten cars. The leading car was 'Calder Valley' Class 110 Driving Motor Composite E51833. Also in the formation were a Class 104 quad and a Met-Camm triple. The Class 110s were familiar visitors to Blackpool, in the 1970's there was a daily Bradford-Blackpool North service always formed of a single three-car set, and at the time was the only regular timetabled passenger train to run over the Copy Pit route. Martyn Hilbert.

110 DMU

20th September 1979

A Calder Valley Class 110 three-car DMU with Driving Motor Composite E52076 was arriving at Chorley with a Blackpool North - Manchester Victoria to Leeds service on September 20th 1979. Much has changed in the intervening years, to the right of the DMU in the background is the location of the steeply-graded closed route to Blackburn (with its bridge span under Stump Lane) that last saw a passenger train in 1960. To the left of this view is the disused bay platform and just beyond the terraced houses where there is now a car park and McDonalds Restaurant, and in the distance the now removed Gasometer. The original stone faced platforms at Chorley were furnished with 1960's electric lights that had replaced the original gas lamps. The platforms were rebuilt and the track re-aligned in 2016 in preparation for higher line speeds when the route is electrified. Martyn Hilbert.

110 DMU

28th September 1979

In its natural habitat, one of Bradford Hammerton Street Depot's BRCW Class 110 3-Car DMU's with Driving Motor Brake Composite (DMBC) E51809 at the rear, was stood in platform 14 at Manchester Victoria with a service to Bradford & Leeds on September 28th 1979. This view sums up the Manchester Victoria of old, oil soaked tracks and a mish-mash of platforms, buildings and canopies partly as a result of a visit by the German Luftwaffe on Christmas Eve 1940 when Manchester city centre was badly damaged including Victoria station. Most of the iron & glass overall roof was destroyed and never replaced. Martyn Hilbert.

110 DMU

28th September 1979

A once familiar sight of a well-worn first generation DMU stood at an equally well-worn Manchester Victoria on September 28th 1979. A BRCW Class 110 3-car DMU with DMCL E52081, complete with its first class saloon, was bringing up the rear of a tea-time service to Leeds via Halifax and Bradford. The former Lancashire & Yorkshire Railway Calder Valley main line was the stamping ground for these units fitted with 180hp Rolls Royce engines for coping with the gradients on the cross Pennine route. Martyn Hilbert.

110 DMU

6th October 1979
