With West Yorkshire PTE 'Metro Train' branding, a two-car Class 111 DMU formed of cars E78971 & E78713 was passing Lostock Hall with a Preston to Leeds service on April 28th 1987. The pair of cars were renumbered in the 78xxx series following conversion to single engine cars in the mid 1980's. Visible on the left is the former Lostock Hall MPD, then still in use for wagon repairs. Martyn Hilbert.

This original slide was supplied undated, but with the HST in the background in InterCity livery, this would be mid-1980s and no later than 1986, as these Blackpool services were given over to new Class 150/2 Sprinters once they became available. A Class 111 and a Class 31/0 at Stratford, London, in the late 1960s. More commonly associated with operations in Yorkshire, Rolls-Royce engined set 51541 + 59569 + 51551 was allocated to 30A from June 1969 till late 1970, and seen on the left in a mixture of green and blue liveries, whilst railwaymen look on at a Class 31/0 leading a short freight train - note the red circle coupling code confirming it as a Class 31/0. DMU at Stratford (Low Level) on November 27, 1970. The autumn early afternoon sun lights up the clouds of exhaust from the two power cars as a 3-car diesel set leaves the Low Level platforms at Stratford for North Woolwich. Closest is Class 111 DMCL E51551, it would be transferred from Stratford to Neville Hill very soon after. It is working with two Class 104 vehicles, a TBSL and DMCL. Tom Burnham.

Travelling towards Buxton on the freight only on the very sharp curve at Blackwell Mills on 30th August 1986, we're travelling on the RCTS railtour "Mancunian Railtour" which was made up of 2 Metro-Cammell 2 car dmu's, the front unit being E53171 and E51222, the rear set 78720 + 78970. Complete with its panelled over headcode box, Metro-Cammell Class 111 Driving Motor Composite Lavatory car M51552 was against the block at Morecambe Promenade, having arrived at the head of a lengthy rake of DMU cars on a Bank Holiday Monday service from Leeds on May 1st 1978. There had been ten of these 3-Car DMU's, fitted with headcode boxes and Rolls-Royce engines, supplied new to the North Eastern Region in 1959/60. The staff on the track on the right had a hose that was filling one of the DMU cars. Visible on the embankment are some of the decapitated steel lattice overhead line gantries for the Lancaster-Morecambe-Heysham electrics that ceased operating in January 1966. Martyn Hilbert.

There were ten 3-car Class 111's fitted with headcode boxes for the North Eastern Region introduced in 1959/1960. All were fitted with Rolls-Royce 180hp Diesel engines. Martyn Hilbert.
