A three-car Rolls-Royce powered Met-Camm set at Leeds, mid to late 1960s, with DMCL E51552 closest. The set attached at the far end could be a Cravens. Graham Clark.

1st May 1978

Complete with its panelled over headcode box, Metro-Cammell Class 111 Driving Motor Composite Lavatory car M51552 was against the block at Morecambe Promenade, having arrived at the head of a lengthy rake of DMU cars on a Bank Holiday Monday service from Leeds on May 1st 1978. There had been ten of these 3-Car DMU's, fitted with headcode boxes and Rolls-Royce engines, supplied new to the North Eastern Region in 1959/60. The staff on the track on the right had a hose that was filling one of the DMU cars. Visible on the embankment are some of the decapitated steel lattice overhead line gantries for the Lancaster-Morecambe-Heysham electrics that ceased operating in January 1966. Martyn Hilbert.

15th September 1978

With its former headcode box panelled over, Metro-Cammell Class 111 Driving Motor Composite Lavatory E51552 was stood at York with a service to Scarborough on September 15th 1978. There were ten 3-car Class 111's fitted with headcode boxes for the North Eastern Region introduced in 1959/1960. All were fitted with Rolls-Royce 180hp Diesel engines. Martyn Hilbert.

On the bright afternoon of September 20th 1981, a variety of dmus grace Sheffield station. The identity of the Class 108 in the middle background is unknown,on the left in the shadows is a Trans-Pennine set with E51964 at the front, while out in the sun is a sparkling Metro-Cammell Class 111 three car set : E51552 + E59106 + E51542. A Class 111 DMU departs from Filey on 22 July 1983 with Scarborough on the destination blind. The cars appear to be 78717 and 78967, outshopped from Doncaster a few weeks early after conversion to single engine vehicle. Brian Daniels.

The first of a set of three pictures of the same Class 111 (78719 + 78969) at Settle Junction taken on 27 July 1988. The train was a Leeds to Morecambe service just after leaving the Settle to Carlisle line and on the "Little North-Western". I have few pictures in this area and made only a few trips around this time with a work colleague with the main aim of photographing steam specials but I'm glad in retrospect that I took advantage of the opportunities to shoot some frames of service trains; to my eyes these are now more interesting. A three-car Metro-Cammell Class 111 diesel set coupled to a Class 108 twin are seen at Kelloe Bank Foot in County Durham on 27 September 1980 during the RCTS "North Eastern No 5" rail tour. For the three-car the centre car is noted on Six Bells Junction as Class 101 59529, the power cars are likely 51554 + 51546. Jeremy Chapter.
