With Midge Hall visible in the far-distance, former West Midlands Class 116 Suburban 2-car DMU formed of cars M53870 & M53923, were passing the Cocker Bar at Ulnes Walton, en-route to their first intermediate station call at Croston whilst working a Preston to Ormskirk service on April 6th 1988. The unit was transferred to Newton Heath Depot in October 1987 as cover for ailing and stored Class 142 Pacers. Set N652 was eventually withdrawn from service in November 1988 and scrapped by Berry's of Leicester. Martyn Hilbert.

Reduced to two-cars, a Class 116 Suburban DMU formed of Driving Motor Brake Second M53870 and Driving Motor Second M53923, were arriving at Rufford with a Preston to Ormskirk service on April 12th 1988. The unit had previously worked in the West Midlands, and had been allocated to Newton Heath (Set N652), to cover for almost new Class 142 Pacers that were then being sidelined with numerous faults. Network South East’s “Network Day” on 16th April 1988 turned out to be dull and damp but armed with a ticket giving me the freedom of the network, I headed for Kent. A surprise sight at Ramsgate was this 4 car Tyseley DMU. No idea where it came from, it doesn’t feature on Six Bells Junction. Must have been a relief for passengers to alight here on what must have been a long journey (wonder what route it took) from the Midlands. Set T403 was a bit of a hybrid, the front car here is class 116 53106, the centre cars were class 127 vehicles displaced from Cricklewood by the Bed-Pan electrification, and the rear car was class 115 51852. A real mystery… Murray Liston.

Taken at Leamington on a "Midline Day", April 23, 1988, when a freedom of the "Midline Area" was on offer for a bargain price. I think the train pictured is the 17.27 Birmingham Snow Hill - Leamington after arrival at its destination, formed of a Class 116 dmu. Various locos and stock were on display at Snow Hill on this day. Lewis Bevan.
