A room with a view - a Class 116 DMU seen crossing the River Derwent just south of Matlock station from the window of a B&B on 10 July 1991. Alan Grange.
At Cardiff Central on 20/7/91, set C395, with 51140 nearest the camera, is on the 17.45 Radyr to Coryton. David Miller.
Tyseley's hybrid 3-car suburban set T326 formed class 116 DMS 53881 (nearest), 59668 (class 115 TCL) & 53865 (class 116 DMBS) arrives at Longbridge en-route from Redditch to Lichfield City on 26/Jul/1991. Robert Chilton.
One feature of many of the old 1st generation DMUs now sadly lacking with the new stock was the forward view, or as in this case, rearward view. Here the view out of the rear of class 116 no. 51143 is seen just after passing Lifford West Junction and just before arriving at Bournville on the way from Redditch to Birmingham New Street, 26/Jul/1991. Robert Chilton.
One feature of many of the old 1st generation DMUs now sadly lacking with the new stock was the forward view, or as in this case, rearward view. Here the view out of the rear of class 116 no. 51143 is seen just after leaving Northfield on the way from Redditch to Birmingham New Street. Points of note are the unit set number board in the secondman's window, the driver's copy of the 'Mirror' from the outbound journey and, unusually, a second set of driving controls lying on the desk. 26/Jul/1991. Robert Chilton.
Class 116 DMS no. 53907 at the head of Tyseley's 3-car suburban set T321, formed with 59753 & 53854 out of sight in the gloom of Birmingham New Street. This was a hybrid set, containing a class 115, a common practice at Tyseley. Waiting to leave for Longbridge on 26/Jul/1991. Robert Chilton.
The often-smokey atmosphere of Birmingham New Street is shown to good effect in this rather gloomy shot, with Tyseley's hybrid 4-car suburban set T409 formed class 116 DMS 53894 (nearest) with out of sight 59367 (class 116 TC), 59600 (class 127 TSL) & 51860 (class 115 DMBS) adding it's contribution on 26/Jul/1991. Many of the Tyseley suburban sets contained class 127 centre trailers which were gangwayed, refurbished and painted blue/grey for the first time in their lives when the St.Pancras - Bedford line was electrified. This saw the class 127 power cars withdrawn, with some being converted for parcels use, and the trailers sent north to the West Midlands for another 10 years' use and becoming the longest-lived class 127 vehicles other than those which were preserved. Robert Chilton.
Tyseley's 3-car suburban set T319 formed class 116 DMS 51149 (nearest), 59756 (class 115 TCL) & 51129 (class 116 DMBS) just protruding from the undercover part of Birmingham New Street. 47851 is stabled in the adjacent line awaiting it's next turn of duty on 26/Jul/1991. Robert Chilton.
C395 (presumably 51153 + 51140) runs into Neath with the 08:47 Llandovery - Cardiff service on 7 August 1991. Stuart Mackay Collection.
Class 116 set C392 (W51147 + W51134) at Cardiff on 21.08.91. Nicholas Youngman.
Barnt Green station is at the junction where the Redditch branch leaves the Birmingham to Gloucester main line. On 26 August 1991 Tyseley set T416 was formed of 53891 + 59609 + 59648 + 51876 from classes 116, 127 and 115 as it joined the branch with a Cross City service from Four Oaks. This formation was the usual for Tyseley's four-car sets at the time but class 150s were not far off mass introduction so scenes like this were well worth recording and in 2021 OHLE masts have changed everything with electric units working both the branch and Bromsgrove terminating trains. Peter Tandy.
51128 (C391 presumably with 51141) at Radyr with the 15:15 to Coryton, 4th September 1991. Gazza Prescott.
51140 (C395) at Coryton with the 11:30 to Bute Road, 4th September 1991, presumably with 51153. Gazza Prescott.
Class 116/101 hybrid set L210 (53083 and presumably 54381) at Slough on 6 September 1991. John Carter.
Strong backlighting and a misty morning don't make for great photographic conditions. This is class 116/101 hybrid set T036 formed of 53054 + 53245 approaching the station at Wellington in Shropshire on 7 September 1991 with a Wolverhampton to Chester train. The bracket signal was notable for having quite short arms for the 3 aspects and had been converted from lower to upper quadrant at some point. The arm on the right had side gave access to a bay in the down platform area. Peter Tandy.
Two Class 116 power twins, C392 (presumably 51147 + 51134) and C389 (presumably 51133 + 51152) setting out from Neath station with the 07:53 (SX) Lydney-Swansea service on 18 September 1991. Robert Thomas.
51133 + 51152 (C389) at Penarth on the 13:45 to Rhymney, 23rd September 1991. Gazza Prescott.
Class 116 Set T420 M53092 seen at Birmingham New Street. October 1991. Nicholas Youngman Collection.
A 2-car hybrid set from Tyseley (set T034) at Boston on 6 November 1991 working a Nottingham-Skegness service. The two dmu vehicles are 51130 + 52042. 52042 was a Class 108 driving car, and was new in September 1960. It was withdrawn from service at Tyseley on 5 October 1992 and was scrapped by Booth Roe in Rotherham. 51130 was a Class 116 driving car and was new in August 1958. It was withdrawn from service, also at Tyseley, in March 1992 and was scrapped by Mayer Parry in Snailwell. Lewis Bevan.
Class 116 DMBS M53061 at Snailwell on November 11, 1991. Nicholas Youngman.
