With an incorrect destination blind and with Western Region 'W' prefixes on its numbers, a two-car Class 116 Suburban DMU formed of cars W53922 & W53839 was stood in platform 2 at Preston with a Preston to Colne service on June 4th 1988. As a three car set, the unit had previously worked from Cardiff Canton Depot, but was transferred to Newton Heath in 1988 to provide cover for the then troublesome new Class 142 fleet. Still retaining West Midlands PTE branding on the outer end of the driving car, a Class 116/101 three-car hybrid DMU formed of cars M53872, M59528 & M53862 formed as Newton Heath allocated set N362, was awaiting departure from the staggered platform layout at Hoscar in West Lancashire with a Southport to Manchester Victoria service on May 14th 1988. The set was disbanded soon after this image was recorded, 53872 was withdrawn in June 1988, 59528 lasted in service until July 1988 whilst 53862 survived until October 1988. All three cars were subsequently scrapped by Berry's of Leicester. Martyn Hilbert.
Class 116 53117, set number N650, is seen at Tyseley while condemned on 03.12.1988. This power car had been transferred in from Newton Heath, hence the 'N' set number and 'Bolton' in the blinds. Andy Cole.

With Midge Hall visible in the far-distance, former West Midlands Class 116 Suburban 2-car DMU formed of cars M53870 & M53923, were passing the Cocker Bar at Ulnes Walton, en-route to their first intermediate station call at Croston whilst working a Preston to Ormskirk service on April 6th 1988. The unit was transferred to Newton Heath Depot in October 1987 as cover for ailing and stored Class 142 Pacers. Set N652 was eventually withdrawn from service in November 1988 and scrapped by Berry's of Leicester. Martyn Hilbert.
Reduced to two-cars, a Class 116 Suburban DMU formed of Driving Motor Brake Second M53870 and Driving Motor Second M53923, were arriving at Rufford with a Preston to Ormskirk service on April 12th 1988. The unit had previously worked in the West Midlands, and had been allocated to Newton Heath (Set N652), to cover for almost new Class 142 Pacers that were then being sidelined with numerous faults. Two hybrid DMU formations at Manchester Victoria on 17-10-88, a Class 116/101 2-car (N656 53843 and possibly 54219) and a Class 101/110 3-car (51533 + 59812 + 51463). The unusual location of the BR logo on the 116 is due to the removal of Valleys branding. On Tour With the Class 13 Army.
