Class 116 Set T420 M53092 seen at Birmingham New Street. October 1991. Nicholas Youngman Collection.
Class 116 DMS 51144 on the rear of Tyseley set T420 formed with class 116 TS 59032, class 115 TCL 59721 and class 115 DMBS 51897 leaving Birmingham New Street on 15/Jul/1992. Robert Chilton.
A hybrid DMU (with a Class 116 vehicle closest, presumably 53878) at Gravelly Hill on 11 February 1989. A unit on a Birmingham Cross-City working draws out of the platform for Lichfield City. Alistair Ness.
Hybrid 4-car DMU set T421 with Class 116 DMS 53878 leading entering the new platforms at Birmingham Moor Street 15-3-89. T421 at this time may have been 53878 + 59741 + 59612 + 51897, Class 116+115+127+115, DMS+TS+TSL+DMBS. On Tour With The Class 13 Army.
Class 116 DMS M53878 at Snailwell on March 24, 1992. Nicholas Youngman.
Class 116 M53897 is the rear vehicle of a 6-car set departing from Skegness on the 2nd July 1988, presumably with 59335 + 59608 + 51898. Kevin Law.
Set T422 (presumably 53897 closest) on a 11XX Skegness - Nuneaton pass 31 466 & 31 458 near Boston on Saturday 20th August 1988. Colin Brooks.
T424 (53055 + 59603) with 118s 51314 + 51329 at Longbridge on an ECS to form the 16:54 to Lichfield City, 9/9/93. Gazza Prescott.
Most of the suburban passenger trains on the Birmingham Cross City Line were class 116 units but odds and ends turned up from time to time. On this occasion a BR blue centre coach (Class 127 TS 59631), probably one of the few remaining at this time in 1986, made a contrast with the standard blue and grey colour scheme (of presumably 53076 + 53118). I took this slide at Longbridge where most of the trains from either Lichfield or Four Oaks terminated and then crossed over and reversed for the return journey. The British Leyland car factory dominated the background. Following the collapse of BL the whole site was closed and is now a retail park while the railway infrastructure has changed with the advent of OHL electrification going to Redditch and Bromsgrove. Peter Tandy.
In 1986 the line from Smethwick West to Rowley Regis was still controlled by semaphore signals. This picture taken at Langley Green on 1 March 1986 shows Tyseley class 116 T524 passing the platform-based signal box and lower quadrant bracket signal as it towards Birmingham New Street from Kidderminster. The low speed arm of the signal controlled access to Rood Ends Goods Yard which served several industrial sites with daily trips from Bescot. Peter Tandy.
53876 Class 116, set number T533, is at Tyseley on 28.03.1987, has just been transferred down from Scotland and still carries the Trans Clyde branding as well as Greater Glasgow symbols. Centre car is presumably 59354. Andy Cole.
Trans-Clyde DMU at Droitwich Spa. Former Scottish set 116388 (53876 + 59354 + 53823) is now Tyseley set T533, seen on 11/4/87, transferred a few weeks before. Stuart Mackay Collection.
A train of empties, led by Class 116 MS 53876, arrives from Tyseley into Birmingham Moor Street on 20 August 1987. Robert28194.
Another picture on 18 June 1994 of what may have been the last DMMU to visit Stratford-upon-Avon this time with class 116 DMS 53124 leading with Class 119 51079 + 51107 as the unit waited to return to Birmingham Snow Hill. The 2 class 119 vehicles had been transferred from Reading to Tyseley in the preceding February and I imagine that the class 116 vehicle had been added to provide extra capacity for the busy Snow Hill lines when covering for unavailable class 150 sprinters which operated virtually all workings in the area by this time. Peter Tandy.
Class 116 DMU set T607 leaving Stratford-upon-Avon on 14 April 1987 with the 08.20 service to Birmingham Moor Street. Nothing of the infrastructure visible behind the train remains with the exception of the GWR footbridge and even this is hidden from this angle by the newer and vast bridge incorporating passenger elevators. Peter Tandy.
A general view of Birmingham Moor Street on 29 January 1987 with class 116 T615 waiting to leave for Leamington Spa and a similar unit behind it probably on a terminating train for Dorridge. Peter Tandy.
Three-car set 53878, 59612 and 53056 stabled at Leicester with Norwich's set 72 behind, headed by 51201 and presumably with out of sight, 54347. Unusually the 116 (with class 127 centre trailer) appears to have a Tyseley set number board in the 2nd man's window but with no set number apparently on it (they would be set T620 at this time). The following year 53878 and 59612 were reformed into four-car set T421 and 53056 was in three-car set T342. Robert Chilton.
Class 116 53867, set number T702 (presumably with 59372 + 53920), is seen in all over blue livery at Tyseley on 17.05.1986. This was one of the last Class 116 sets to carry all over blue livery and was withdrawn in this livery. Andy Cole.
Still in BR blue livery and destined to remain so until withdrawal, Tyseley class 116 DMU set T702, comprising M53920, 59372, 53867, sat in the bay platform 4 at Hereford station on 12th August 1986. Paul James.
All blue Class 116 DMU, set TS 702, formed DMS 53920, TC 59372 & DMBS 53867, runs along the Up line, having crossed over from the Down Platform Loop. January 1987. Paul James.
