Class 116 Derby suburban 3-car DMU set TS625 {presumably 53106 + 59616 + 53056) in Birmingham Moor Street late Feburary 1987. On Tour With The Class 13 Army.
Class 116 set TS625 at Stourbridge Junction on 1st February 1987. Ian Buck.
Friday 03/04/1987, 1520 hours at Whitchurch (Shropshire). Set TS625 has just arrived with the 1450 service from Shrewsbury which terminates at Whitchurch. The driver enters 53106 before commencing a reversing move to transfer the set to the Shrewsbury bound platform. The set will then work the 1525 service to Shrewsbury and Wolverhampton. Note that the date shown on the cab board is wrong - this photo was taken on 03/04/1987! In 1987 this was the only service on the Shrewsbury to Crewe line to terminate and reverse at Whitchurch. The crossover which allowed this reversal was removed many years ago so it is no longer possible. Robert Hope.
Friday 03/04/1987, 1520 hours at Whitchurch (Shropshire). Set TS625 has just arrived with the 1450 service from Shrewsbury which terminates at Whitchurch. The driver has reversed TS625 to the crossover and is now moving to the southbound platform ready to form the 1525 service to Shrewsbury and Wolverhampton. 53106 leads the set. The view looks north to Crewe. Robert Hope.
On 16 April 1987, the Thursday before Easter Sunday, a Class 116 (with a 127 centre car) and Class 117 are seen approaching Southall, with what could be an Easter relief to Southall. Chris McKee.
Hybrid 116/101/116 3-car dmu set TS626 (53093 and presumably 59115 + 53818) in BR Rail Blue & Grey with all yellow front ends, with another pair of 3-car units (9 cars altogether!) at Newport on a Cardiff - Leicester service, 07/85. Hugh Llewelyn.
After 55000 had shunted from platform 1 to 2 at Stratford-upon-Avon on 16 May 1986 an arrival from Birmingham Moor Street was allowed to enter the station ready to form the 08.26 back to Birmingham. Tyseley class 116 unit T627 formed of 53061 + 59613 + 53092 is shown here passing the inner home signal with the starters for platform 3 and the Cold Store siding on the right of the picture. Half of Stratford East (sometimes wrongly called Stratford North) signalbox is just visible at the back of the 3 car unit. Peter Tandy.
B.R. Derby MBS 53061 has just arrived at Birmingham Moor Street, it will form the 19.40 Birmingham to Shirley train. The other two vehicles are presumably 59613 + 53112. Moor St has grown since this was taken on 15th December 1986, the area behind the spear fence was the old carriage sidings, it is now the new buildings that form the island between platforms 2 and 3. Geoff Dowling.
Is that two staff member standing looking at the engine? This is believed to be 53061, seen at Aberdare on 13 November 1987. It was allocated to Tyseley at the time and displays set number TS627 in the left cab window. M53092 is on the rear, the centre car is presumably Class 127 TSL 59596. Stuart Mackay Collection.
A mixed industrial scene between Cradley Heath and Lye stations on the Birmingham to Droitwich line on 4 July 1987 as class 116 T629 presumably formed of 53114 + 59592 + 53079 worked from Birmingham New Street to Stourbridge Junctions where it would have reversed and gone back to the city. Peter Tandy.
Class 116 53865, set number T631, is seen at Tyseley carriage sidings on 11.10.1986 with a Heartswop Special headboard in the cab window. Andy Cole.
Tyseley Class 116 set TS701 circa 1986. It is seen nearing the top of the Lickey Incline, heading away from Bromsgrove station, and will soon enter the cutting. Curly42.
Still in BR blue livery, Tyseley Class 116 DMU set TS702 (presumably 53867 + 59372 + 53920) sits in the bay platform - platform 4 - at Hereford station on 24th May 1986. John Crooks.
Still in BR blue livery, Tyseley class 116 DMU set TS702 (presumably 53867 + 59372 + 53920) heads into Hereford from Shelwick Junction with a train from Birmingham on 24th May 1986. John Crooks.
Tyseley's class 116 unit T702 (53867 and presumably 59372 + 53920) stands in platform 3 at Stratford-upon-Avon on 7 June 1986 with the 08.30 to Birmingham Moor Street and before the driver had returned to the cab after shunting the train from platform 1 and changed the lights to white. At this time several DMUs were stabled overnight in the platforms here as the station office was a crew signing-on point with its own allocation of drivers and guards. A class 121 single car unit is just visible behind T702 waiting to shunt into platform 1 and work Leamington Spa trains. In the winter the units were left with their engines idling all night, possibly because they wouldn't have started on a frosty morning, and a cloud of dense stinking diesel exhaust often hung over the station area. Peter Tandy.
TS702 (53867 + 59372 + 53920) at Tyseley, Sunday 8 June 1986. Mel Holley.
Tyseley Class 116 DMU set TS702 (53867 + 59372 + 53920) departs Stratford-upon-Avon with a Birmingham service on 8 June 1986. Keith Miller.
Class 116 Derby 3-car DMU, Tyseley set 702, 53920+59372+53867 all in rail blue at Birmingham Moor Street 11-6-86 The set had been transferred up from Stratford and was the only rail blue set in the Birmingham area. Never repainted, it was withdrawn in these colours a couple of years later. On Tour With the Class 13 Army.
In 1986 I lived within sight of the railway line at Stratford-upon-Avon and from my kitchen window on 1 July 1986 saw the last all-blue class 116 (set TS702, presumably 53867 + 59372 + 53920) arrive from Birmingham Moor Street to form the 08.00 departure back to the West Midlands. I grabbed a camera and asked the signaller, a good friend, if I might take a shot from his window as the unit crossed the Stratford-upon-Avon canal alongside a good show of elderflower on the embankment. A class 121 single unit had fortunately for me just gone towards the station with an arrival to leave a few minutes later as the 08.12 to Leamington Spa. I didn't have time to wait for this to leave as it was time to head off to work in town. Peter Tandy.
After work on 1 July 1986 I kept an eye open for T702, the last all-blue class 116 DMU, to appear again at Stratford-upon-Avon. The diagrams weren't straightforward for any particular unit and involved trips over several different routes. This unit had clearly switched to the Leamington Spa line as it arrived at Stratford ready to form the 18.35 service back to that town. I had a word with the signalman on the 2nd shift and established that he was happy for me to take a lineside shot as the train left the station. The signal in the foreground is the lower quadrant controlling the exit from the Cold Store Siding by then used only for the overnight stabling of stock (and failed units awaiting rescue). TS702 is presumably formed 53867 + 59372 + 53920. Peter Tandy.
