116 DMU

20th March 1987

Now here's a combination i don't think I ever saw again...! Approaching Twyford on the down relief on 20th March 1987 is an ECS working formed of a Derby built Class 116, with a Class 127 Trailer, and a GRCW built Class 119. The train was running from Paddington - Reading where it was split, with the Tyseley interloper returning home as the 1140 Reading - Birmingham New St service. Unfortunately i only got the formation of the leading unit, which was, 53053 + 59614 + 51146. M53053 was delivered new to TY in May 1957 as W50053, with its original partners W59003 + W50095. It remained allocated to the West Midland's depot for all of its working life and was finally withdrawn after a career lasting 28 years on 27th May 1995. It was to be scrapped by MC Metals at Springburn. Nigel Mack.

53053 with the Tyseley set number T324 is working the 13.08 Aberdare to Penarth service on 06/05/1989. The train is passing the large Abercwmboi Phuracite plant which is happily pumping smoke into the atmosphere. The plant has 2 ex-BR 08 shunters at work in the yard and a mix of different coal wagons can be seen in the background. Geoff Dowling.

116 DMU

4th March 1990

Set: T324

Class 116 DMBS 53053 leading set T324, with 59672 and 53101 on the Lickey Incline near Bromsgrove on 4/Mar/1990. The centre trailer is a class 115 TCL. The leading vehicle still retains it's top marker light - originally the earliest batches of class 116s had four marker lights, one above the destination box and three across the cab front. Later the lower centre marker light was removed leaving just the two standard marker lights on the cab front; in most cases the top light was removed at the same time. Robert Chilton.

An interesting formation (116 DMBS, 116 DMS, 116 DMS, 115 DMBS (smaller brake compartment) and 116 DMS), seen at Small Heath, Birmingham, emitting a great plume of smoke as it passes. The destination blind reads Longbridge, but this is an ECS move (no passengers are visible) from Tyseley depot to Birmingham New Street to work on the Cross-City Line. The leading car is M53053, and set T333, which dates it around late 1993. Graeme Phillips Collection.

116 DMU

7th September 1991

Strong backlighting and a misty morning don't make for great photographic conditions. This is class 116/101 hybrid set T036 formed of 53054 + 53245 approaching the station at Wellington in Shropshire on 7 September 1991 with a Wolverhampton to Chester train. The bracket signal was notable for having quite short arms for the 3 aspects and had been converted from lower to upper quadrant at some point. The arm on the right had side gave access to a bay in the down platform area. Peter Tandy.
