116 DMU

20th June 1992

Set: T054

The 10.12 Stratford-upon-Avon to Leamington Spa service on 20 June 1992 was made up of class 116 vehicle 53838 leading followed by Class 101 53267 as I pictured it going slowly around the curve from Hatton West Junction into platform 3 of the station. The leading vehicle had recently received a high(ish) intensity headlight to supposedly increase visibility for those working on the track. The up main line had just been relaid and re-ballasted and it looks as if a few yards of the branch had had a bit of spare material dropped around it. Peter Tandy.

The Proclaimers 'Letters from America' may have been a few years in the future but seems apt in reference to the near derelict condition of Paisley Canal station on a cold but sunny January day a couple of years prior to closure. 116 DMU

15th September 1990

Withdrawn and damaged first generation DMU sets awaiting their fate, were stabled at the side of Newton Heath Depot on September 15th 1990. A pair of weary-looking Derby built Class 116 Suburban Driving Motor Brake Seconds 53842 & 53839 were keeping company with a fire-damaged BRCW Class 104 two-car set formed of cars 53532 & 53487. The adjacent sidings with diesel soaked trackwork have clearly been the resting place for other withdrawn units, the ground being strewn with various fittings and components including an wooden emergency evacuation ladder from a brake compartment. Martyn Hilbert.

50840

116 DMU

10th February 1985

Set: TS506

Two of Tyseley's suburban 3-car units have just visited the fuelling point on 10/02/1985. They had pulled up to the bridge from which the picture was taken and will now move onto the carriage sidings and join the other units to the right of the yard. Closest is set TS506, 53840 and presumably 59612 + 53100, a 116/127/116 hybrid. Geoff Dowling.

116 DMU

8th March 1986

Set: TS506

This class 116 at Stourbridge Junction is TS506 (presumably 53840 + 59612 + 53100), making the journey from Birmingham New Street to Kidderminster on 8 March 1986. Despite the frequency of passenger trains on this route and the relatively large number of trains from the Bescot to Stourbridge freight line, the Down Goods Loop wouldn't have seen a huge amount of use. This was because anything from the fright line needing to have been held would simply have waited at Stourbridge North Junction. Freights from the Old Hill line, although fewer in number, may well have been turned inside here although the coating of rust on the rails suggests that this wasn't a daily occurrence. I also think than ECS workings, especially when the single coach set used on the Stourbridge Town shuttles was swapped for fuelling and maintenance at Tyseley, would have been routed along the loop to await a path across the main lines to the sidings. Peter Tandy.
