A Class 120 DMU - 53701 closest with Blackpool North on the destination blind - at Bolton when semaphore signalling was extant on 24 May 1985. The centre car is likely Class 104 59153, the rear car presumably 53681. Chris Thorp.
For the 1985 Summer timetable an 06.37 Saturdays Only Stratford-upon-Avon to London Paddington train was introduced. Contrary to a rumour started by one of the station staff at Stratford this was not a class 50-hauled train to match the weekdays Paddington to Birmingham express which ran via Hatton but a DMU formed on most occasions of a pair of 3 coach Tyseley class 166 units. On 25 May 1985 I saw the ECS arriving from my then home's kitchen window and went to the station to capture this view of a pair of Derby-based class 120s led by EP510 (probably 50713 + 59257 + 50667) in platform 2 with 55012 heading a 3 coach class 116 in P3. It was common practice at the time for Tyseley to use whatever resources they had available but this was the only time that I saw anything but class 116 units on this train. Peter Tandy.
On a dull, overcast Bank Holiday Monday May 27th 1985, Swindon Cross Country Class 120 M51580 leads an Ormskirk to Windermere excursion through Midge Hall. The working was formed of a 3-Car Class 120 and a 2-Car Class 108. The disused platforms of Midge Hall Station, closed in October 1961 are clearly visible. When the Ormskirk line was rationalised in 1970, double track was retained from Farington Curve Junction on the WCML to Midge Hall. The former up line needed renewal by the early 1980s and was taken out of use in 1983. As a consequence, Signal MH14 at Midge Hall was relocated from the end of the old Up platform onto the middle of what had been the Up line. Martyn Hilbert.
A three-car Swindon Cross-Country DMU with Driving Motor Second Lavatory (DMSL) M53666 leading, was passing Farington Junction with a Blackpool North to Manchester Victoria service on May 28th 1985. This open view is no longer possible due to unchecked lineside tree growth. Martyn Hilbert.

A Special DMU; hybrid 120/101 set M53723 + M59064 + M53674 at York on June 17, 1985. John Carter.
A Class 120 hybrid set drifts through the West Lancashire countryside at Cocker Bar between Midge Hall and Ulnes Walton with the 17.55 Preston to Ormskirk service on June 25th 1985. The former Derby Etches Park set EP503 was formed of two Class 120 Swindon built driving cars and a Class 101 centre trailer car. This particular out and back service on the Ormskirk line was regularly diagrammed for a Class 120 during this period. The sets were normally used on Manchester to Blackpool North services. Martyn Hilbert.
On a damp June 29th 1985, a Derby Etches Park (EP522) Swindon 'Cross-Country' Class 120 DMU, with Driving Motor Second Lavatory (DMSL) M53678 leading, was stabled between duties in the now removed bay platform on the East side of Stafford station alongside Railway Street. This was taken during the period of the Crewe Remodelling project when no trains were serving Crewe and many services were starting and terminating at Stafford, with all through services on the WCML using the normally freight only Crewe Independent Lines that bypass Crewe station. Martyn Hilbert.
A three-car Swindon Class 120 DMU with Driving Motor Composite M53741 leading, was stood in the North facing bay at Stafford with a service to Derby on June 29th 1985. This was during the period when the Crewe Remodelling project was underway with no trains being able to use Crewe station. Martyn Hilbert.
A hybrid Class 120 three-car set with DMBS M53702 and including a centre trailer coach from a Class 101, passes the Orchard at the rear of Cocker Bar Farm as it runs between Midge Hall and Croston whilst working the 17.55 Preston to Ormskirk service on June 29th 1985. This particular service was diagrammed for a Class 120 set that was usually employed on Manchester Victoria to Blackpool North workings, and had a tea-time out and back run on the Ormskirk route. (The destination blind is still showing Blackpool North). These were the days when the passing loop was utilised at Rufford and an intensive service was used at the late afternoon/early evening peak, when four different DMU sets were used on the Preston to Ormskirk services. Martyn Hilbert.
