A three-car Swindon Cross-Country DMU with Driving Motor Brake Second (DMBS) M51578 leading (and centre car 59580), was arriving at Rufford with a Preston to Ormskirk service on July 25th 1985. These were the days when during the evening peak, the passing loop at Rufford enabled two units to pass. There used to be three different DMU's that worked to Ormskirk in that late afternoon/early evening period. The first, in the late afternoon would be a West Yorkshire set (101 or 110) that had worked to Preston from Leeds, whilst the second would be the regular unit that had been running back and forth all day, the third being a Class 120 off a Manchester - Blackpool working, bringing the non- too common sight of a Swindon Cross-Country DMU to the Ormskirk line. A hybrid Swindon Cross-Country 3-Car DMU set (Formerly Derby Etches Park Depot set EP503) with W51573 leading, departs from Kirkham with Manchester Victoria to Blackpool South tea-time through service on August 2nd 1985. Sandwiched between the two Class 120 driving cars was a Metro-Cammell Class 101 trailer car. This viewpoint including the semaphore signal has now gone, a six-foot palisade fence now segregates the running lines from the cobbled road to the former goods yard. Martyn Hilbert.

On a tea-time filling in turn, a three-car Swindon Cross Country Class 120 DMU with a Driving Motor Second Lavatory (DMSL) leading, was passing the Cocker Bar at Ulnes Walton whilst running between Midge Hall and Croston with a Preston to Ormskirk service on August 29th 1985. These were the days when the passing loop was utilised at Rufford, and in the evening peak, three different DMU sets operated the Preston to Ormskirk services. The service was strengthened by one out-and-back working of a unit that had worked from Leeds to Preston and often brought the sight of a WYPTE Class 101 or a 110 to West Lancashire, whilst the service seen in this view was a Blackpool North to Manchester Victoria unit that made one trip to Ormskirk and back, bringing relative luxury first generation DMU style to the Ormskirk branch! Martyn Hilbert.

Coasting down towards New Mills South Junction is a six car Swindon Cross-Country class 120 dmu formation (the closest set with a Met-Camm centre car), with a returning summer Saturday Skegness - Manchester Piccadilly working. These units were not common along here, it's possibly the only time I saw one here! Andrew J Crowther.

With a friendly wave from the driver, a three-car Swindon built Class 120 Cross Country DMU with Driving Motor Brake Second M53739 leading, had just passed over Pages Crossing, South of Midge Hall with the 18.00 Preston to Ormskirk service on September 11th 1985. This was a regular turn for a Class 120 unit in 1985/86. With the passing loop at Rufford being used for its intended purpose (trains passing), the evening peak service on the Ormskirk line saw three different DMU sets in operation. The normal service unit was in use, then a West Yorkshire based set made one return trip to Ormskirk from Preston, filling-in whilst having worked from Leeds to Preston, and finally one of the Class 120 sets normally used on Blackpool North-Manchester Victoria duties, also made one return trip along the line.
