1986 saw a welcome return of Swindon DMUs to Ayrshire in the form of an influx of Cross Country Units. Most of the Swindon units had received Metro Cammel centre cars. Here 53651 (formerly of Derby Etches Park set 519, and appears to have a broken window mid-vehicle) and 53648 are seen at the magnificent Ayr station. Andrew McConnell.

Class 120 units were not frequent visitors to Stratford-upon-Avon, especially after a light snowfall with strong winter sunshine. When this happened on 8 February 1986 the unit stuck to its diagram between Birmingham Moor Street and Stratford, which gave me the opportunity for a few shots around the station area. I had good relationships both with the station staff and the regular signalmen and was able to walk around the best photo spots as I wished. This picture shows the 11.10 from Birmingham passing the intermediate starter signal before arriving at the terminus. Peter Tandy.
The 12.20 Stratford-upon-Avon to Birmingham Moor Street is seen leaving from platform 3, as shown by the lower quadrant signal being in the "off" position, on 8 February 1986. Platform 2's starter was the tall upper quadrant signal protruding from the centre car of the train. Peter Tandy.
In its last few months of passenger traffic, a Class 120 Swindon Cross-Country set with vehicles 51576 + 59582 + 51590 in seen in platform 13 of Manchester Victoria with the 17:30 Manchester Victoria - Blackpool North service on 9 February 1986. At the start of the summer timetable on May 11 the centre car would be withdrawn and the power cars would be transferred to parcel use. A blurred image but added as the Class 120 seems to be carrying a set number in the cab window, Tyseley style, albeit a chalked version (maybe 400?). One of the "bandit" Class 101s is alongside. Taken at Shrewsbury on 15 February 1986. Jonathan Hazan.

A class 120/101 Swindon/Metro-Cammell hybrid DMU departs from Derby on 17th February 1986. Jonathan Hazan.
Class 120 unit 51581 + 59587 + 51585 has arrived at Manchester Victoria from Blackpool North on 17th February 1986. The driver making his way along the platform rubs his hands, presumably not with glee at seeing a comfortable former Western Region-allocated Swindon Cross-Country three-car unit, but most likely from the bone-biting cold of the day. The two motor coaches from this unit were converted to a parcels set just three months later. Gordon Edgar.
One of the stylish and well-appointed Swindon Class 120 'Cross-Country' DMU's was stabled between duties in Croft Street Sidings at Preston on February 22nd 1986. The Newton Heath allocated three-car set was formed of cars M51575, M59581 & M51584 and had been transferred from the Western Region in 1982. Martyn Hilbert.
The western exit from Manchester Victoria was an excellent spot for photographing a large variety of traffic including several different classes of DMU. On 27 February 1986 a 3 coach class 120 was pictured on the start of its journey to Blackpool with the well-known background of some industrial buildings adding to the scene. Peter Tandy.
