A 5-Car Trans-Pennine DMU set had just arrived at Liverpool Lime Street with a service from Hull on May 22nd 1979. Complete with its oil tail-lamp, E51965 was a Driving Motor Composite. These stylish DMUs, built at Swindon Works in 1960 had a mixture of saloon and compartment seating. They were stalwarts on the Liverpool-Hull route for most of their lives, until the last few were withdrawn in 1984. Martyn Hilbert.

Not long afterwards, these units were withdrawn as their duties were taken over by class 31 loco-hauled trains. The patch on the lower right of the cab front identifies the closest vehicle as E51966. Still plenty of railway-related detail around, along with a full cycle shed. The occupants of the house on the right will no doubt be bracing themselves for the next Deltic-hauled service to shake them to the core. Syd Young.
