The Class 126 diesel units built for the Ayrshire Coast and introduced in 1959 were designed so that they could be formed as 6-car trains with through gangways. The gangway connections were removed and panelled over from the 1970s to prevent draughts in the driving cab. One such carriage is seen here at Ayr on August 30, 1981. Jeremy Chapter.

A Swindon Inter-City at Beith North, just north of Glengarnock with Sc51025 leading, circa 1982. As the DMBS vehicle determines the unit number it was unusual for a Swindon DMS to carry it and Sc51025 unusually (and incorrectly in this period) carried 126418. It did however make the vehicle easy to identify even in blurry shots 30-odd years later... Andrew McConnell.
126 418 at Prestwick in 1982. One of the last few Intercity sets in its last summer of operation. Andrew McConnell.
Recently withdrawn Swindon Intercity DMUs were boarded up (due to asbestos contamination) and dumped at Falkland Yard - a short distance from their former home of Ayr Depot - prior to transport to Meyer Newman (Snailwell) for scrapping. Sc51033 was withdrawn from service 3/1982. The Swindon Diesel Preservation Society received permission to remove parts from these units for the preserved Class 126 unit as long as we did not enter the vehicles or remove parts that would affect braking. Behind are two Cravens cars, 51476 and 51474, then Class 126 centre car 59394. Andrew McConnell.
A typical dreich day in Johnstone, circa 1980. The DMBS (and DMS) of the Class 126 units is still showing it's full complement of destination board holders, the centre car has had them removed. Andrew McConnell.
