The 1015 Gospel Oak - Barking service passes the signal box at Upper Holloway as it brakes for its first station stop formed of Cricklewood's 2 Car Class 104 power twin M53492 + M53477 on 16th May 1985. Nigel Mack.
Its still the real railway at Ely as 2 Car Met-Cam DMU set L223 formed of 51444 + 54068 run past Ely Dock Jn with a terminating local service from Cambridge on 12th March 1990. In the sidings the death knell beckons as 31422 awaits departure with the electrification train. Within a few years the box will be closed, the signals felled, and ugly overhead wires will ruin the scene .... But thats progress - so I've been told .. !! Nigel Mack.
In the early 1990s much of the former Sorting Sidings at Margam Yard was turned over for the storage and scrapping of withdrawn rolling stock, and a scrap company Gwent Demolition set up business there. Here many hundreds of vehicles met their fate including this Laira allocated Class 108 DMBS vehicle 51936, formerly of set 828, which stands at the head of class mates 59382 + 59380 on 14th June 1992 Nigel Mack.
Displaced from the London Division of the Midland Main Line by Class 317 EMUs upon completion of the BedPan electrification in 1982 (Although to be fair an ASLEF dispute over OMO delayed their demise for a while longer ... ) some Class 127 DMUs were reduced to a 3 car formation and used on the newly introduced Gospel Oak to Barking service. Here, with M51645 leading, the 1015 Gospel Oak to Barking service slows for the station stop at Upper Holloway as it passes the signal box on 15th August 1983. Nigel Mack.
A couple of hundred feet away from this location - Dalston Western Junction - was my Junior school (St Judes) - I had special permission from the Headmaster to be the only boy allowed to carry out my trainspotting hobby in the girls playground on the roof of the school ...!! In those days the only passenger trains over the route during school hours were the Broad St - Richmond services operated by Class 501 EMUs on the nearest tracks. There was no station (Dalston Kingsland) behind the signal box as that route was freight only and there was plenty of it with Classes 15/20/25/31/33/37 and 47s a regular sight. Scroll on 15 years or so to 12th April 1985 and here is the 1343 North Woolwich - Gospel Oak service accelerating away from the Dalston Kingsland stop, passing the box at Western Jn, formed of a Class 105 with E53360 + E54449. Known as the "Crosstown Linkline" service it ran from Camden Road - North Woolwich and operated from 14th May 1979 - 11th May 1985. Nigel Mack.

A Gloucester Cross-Country DMU passes Wynnstay Colliery at Ruabon while working the 15:45 Chester - Wolverhampton High Level on Tuesday 15 August 1967. Believed to be from the waning days of the Crieff line, we have a Park Royal railbus stopping to exchange tablets with signalman Willie Doig at Crieff before continuing on to Comrie.
