105 DMU

Class 105 DMU set 31 at East Suffolk Junction, circa 1987. Closest is presumably E53375 with Colchester on the blind. Stuart Mackay Collection.

107 DMU

Class 107s (107737, presumably 51998 + 59782 + 52021 and 107726, presumably 52018 + 51986) stabled at Leuchars between Golf Open specials in July 1990. From here passengers transferred to buses for St Andrews. Stuart Mackay Collection.

met-camm-lightweight DMU

Met-Camm "Lightweight" E79289 in Doncaster Works, circa 1967. This is a good example of the vinyl stickers for the BR logo and rail alphabet numbers being applied before the blue paint - they had an extra layer that was peeled off after painting. Behind is a Calder Valley car and another Met-Camm. Stuart Mackay Collection.

116 DMU

A Class 116 DMU seen at Stratford-upon-Avon on 18 September 1978. Stuart Mackay Collection.

123 DMU

A Swindon-built DMU led by Class 123 52088 at South Milford on 13 June 1983. Stuart Mackay Collection.

108 DMU

The retro-green Class 108 DMU 53964 + 54247 at Crewe on 9 August 1988. Stuart Mackay Collection.

110 DMU

Class 110 power car E51812 in Vic Berry's scrapyard circa May 1990. On the top of the stack on the right is Class 116 DMBS 53080. Stuart Mackay Collection.

101 DMU

Class 101 DMU set T078 (presumably 53146 + 51249) on the Skegness line at Firsby on 29 June 1991. A 31 can be seen in the distance, it looks like it has a headboard so possibly on a railtour? Stuart Mackay Collection.

104 DMU

Standing in the smoke filled gloom of Birmingham New Street is a BRC&W DMU, clean and shiny although by this time (09/1963) it has been in service for a few years, the driver glares after his receding passengers who could not be bothered to close a door. On the right, on the Midland side of the station, is Stanier Jubilee 45676 Codrington the train is and it will soon be heading west towards Gloucester or Bristol. Image taken by Peter Shoesmith, Geoff Dowling and John Whitehouse Collection.

A frosty sunny morning at Stourbridge Junction was the scene for a picture of 55003 trundling away down the steep branch line to Stourbridge Town on 31/12/1986. Compared with the train service today the branch had many fewer workings when these units were in use. Past the freshly painted signal box on the right can be seen a class 116 unit and a class 31 diesel, the 31 would work various trips in the Kingswinford/Langley Green/Bescot triangle. Geoff Dowling.

103 DMU

The date was 4th July 1981, a typical North Wales bash. We would start around Chester and work towards Llandudno Junction timing the moves to catch the class 40s and miss the dreaded duffs, on this overcast day we had reached Llandudno Junction in mid afternoon. I took this under the concrete bridge that carries the Holyhead Road, a 24mm lens on an Olympus OM1. The train is a Llandudno to Manchester with a mixture of types, a 103 and a 108, on Summer Saturdays anything that could stagger out and back would be used to move the crowds. The cars are typical of the sort that gricers used, cheap and tatty but still with life in them. They would be thrashed from one end of the country to the other until they broke, their insides were always full of food remains, cigarette packets and empty bottles. These cars were often seen at photo stops, their doors left open either because time was tight or to save time getting inside for the blast to the next location. Happy Days. Geoff Dowling.

118 DMU

Smoke and Ice. Laying a dense cloud of smoke in the freezing January air a 3 car 116 set with 51316 leading rattles towards Birmingham on 15/01/1991. The train was the 12.23 Redditch to Lichfield service, it has just passed the site of Somerset Road station between University and Five Ways. To the left the Worcester canal is frozen with thick ice and behind the train the University clock tower stands proud. Geoff Dowling.

Peter took two views of this scene at Kings Norton, this is the second. Looking at the beehive hair styles and clothing of the ladies I would think around 1964, it is certainly winter time. The Park Royal DMU seems to be causing some interest the two lads are pointing at it and the stationmaster is also interested, his regulation hat at a jaunty angle. Stanier Black Five 44775 is standing tender first in the Birmingham platform. On the building end to the right of the DMU cab is a poster with a Derby Lightweight at passing Bassenthwaite Lake. Image taken by Peter Shoesmith. Geoff Dowling and John Whitehouse Collection.

103 DMU

Peter took two views of this scene at Kings Norton circa 1964, this is the first, with the Park Royal DMU gliding into the platform, many doors already open. Stanier Black Five 44775 is standing tender first at the Birmingham platform, carrying the correct 'light engine' lamp code. Image taken by Peter Shoesmith. Geoff Dowling and John Whitehouse Collection.

derby-lightweight DMU

This seems to be one of the four-car Derby Lightweights. Peter left no details on this negative but by the style of dress it would appear to be around 1957, presumably at Platform 10 of Newcastle Central. Image taken by Peter Shoesmith. Geoff Dowling and John Whitehouse Collection.

105 DMU

51280 is working an ECS move at Sleaford North Signal box (now demolished) on 08/08/1981. Some signalmen would wear their uniform, even in a remote location, but this chap has chosen a pink shirt and loud check crimplene slacks for his shift, at least he didn't need a Hi-Vis jacket! Geoff Dowling.

101 DMU

Okay so it may not be a Monday, Peter left not one detail with this picture but it has that miserable cold November morning look as people grudgingly return to work. I guess, going by the vast jacket shoulders and flapping flares the picture dates from the mid 1970's It is a simple shot of a Norwich Class 101 waiting at Kings Norton station with a Birmingham train. The island platform is obviously still in use but all the fine buildings have been swept away to be replaced by a cheap and nasty bus shelter. Image taken by Peter Shoesmith. Geoff Dowling and John Whitehouse Collection.

116 DMU

53053 with the Tyseley set number T324 is working the 13.08 Aberdare to Penarth service on 06/05/1989. The train is passing the large Abercwmboi Phuracite plant which is happily pumping smoke into the atmosphere. The plant has 2 ex-BR 08 shunters at work in the yard and a mix of different coal wagons can be seen in the background. Geoff Dowling.

115 DMU

A Derby quad set is seen just north of Wendover station, heading to Aylesbury sometime in 1966. Stuart Mackay Collection.

101 DMU

Met-Camm DTCL SC56383 on Hamilton depot, circa 1967. It is paired with SC51231, still in green, and faces Cravens DMBS Sc51484. Stuart Mackay Collection.
