101 DMU

L835 and L841 at Ealing Broadway in 1993. This was taken when the Greenford shuttles had some of the the Final Classic DMU sets, as most services were provided by the class 165. These were both 2 car sets by this point. Aaron Oxford.

114 DMU

On a freezing Winter afternoon, a Derby Class 114 two-car DMU formed of cars E56022 & E50022 was running under clear signals at Worksop whilst working a Lincoln to Sheffield service on January 16th 1977. Martyn Hilbert.

108 DMU

Taken with a long-lens, a Derby Class 108 two-car DMU formed of cars M51925 & M52037 was approaching Bamber Bridge with a Colne to Preston service on August 10th 1979. At the time the stone built Lancashire & Yorkshire Railway waiting room was still standing on the eastbound platform, along with the subway buildings adjacent to the level crossing. The 108 had just passed under what was a historic bridge. The brick built structure was the first in the UK that took a Motorway over a railway line, the M6 Preston By-pass opening for business in December 1958 and was the first stretch of motorway in Britain. The bridge was enlarged and altered when the M6 was widened in the late 1990's. Martyn Hilbert.

105 DMU

At the northern stub of the surviving portion of the former Midland & Great Northern Joint Railway (M&GNJR) still in use as part of the national network, a Cravens Class 105 two-car DMU formed of cars E56114 & E51293 had arrived at Sheringham with a service from Norwich via a reversal at Cromer on April 29th 1980. The single platform terminus at Sheringham, complete with its BR Eastern Region dark blue enamel sign, opened on January 2nd 1967 enabling the closure of the adjacent level crossing and the original M&GNJR station (now owned by the North Norfolk Railway). The single platform was intended as a temporary station as the line was scheduled for closure. In the event, it has gone on to be upgraded to accommodate the new Greater Anglia Class 755 DMU's. A connection from the Network Rail line at Sheringham to the North Norfolk Railway was opened in 2010. Martyn Hilbert.

108 DMU

Complete with its first class saloon, Derby Class 108 Driving Motor Composite Lavatory (DMCL) M52040 was stabled in the bay platform at Wigan Wallgate on the evening of August 14th 1977. The DMU was almost buffered-up to a pair of departmental open wagons parked against the block (DM749384 'Haddock' & DB908130 'Grampus'). In 1977 the former Lancashire & Yorkshire Railway station at Wigan Wallgate was still lit by gas, with the cast iron platform columns having sugg's lanterns and faded BR London Midland Region maroon enamel totems. The place was in a time-wrap and a stones throw from the 1970's modernity at the brutally rebuilt Wigan North Western on the WCML. Martyn Hilbert.

104 DMU

A line up of stabled DMU's at Croft Street Sidings, adjacent to Preston Power Box on March 23rd 1986. Left to right, a BRCW Class 104 Driving Motor Brake Second (DMBS) M53466 was a the head of a four-car rake of 104's. Next to it was a Class 108 with DTSL M54256 against the block with Cravens Class 105 M53812 alongside. Just visible on the extreme right is ex Class 127 car M55970 in use as a parcels/mail/newspapers unit fitted with roller shutter doors. Despite appearances this was a shot over a low wire fence. Martyn Hilbert.

108 DMU

A hybrid three-car DMU with Class 108 Driving Motor Brake Second (DMBS) M51928 leading, had a Class 101 Trailer Car (presumably 59530) inserted between it and the rear Class 108 car (presumably 52044), forming a well-filled Blackpool North to Manchester Victoria service at Leyland on May 23rd 1986. Martyn Hilbert.

101 DMU

A WYPTE refurbished Metro-Cammell Class 101 DMU with Driving Trailer Composite Lavatory (DTCL) car E56220 leading, was running ECS from Marsden on the East side of the 3 Mile 60 Yard Standedge Tunnel, and was approaching the signal box at Diggle, in readiness to cross over to the Up line to return ECS to Marsden from where it would form a service to Huddersfield on August 11th 1979. This was common practice at the time, track rationalisation at Marsden station had removed any crossovers for terminating DMU services, and subsequently they had to travel to Diggle to cross over for the return journey. A third bi-directional platform has since been added at Marsden. Martyn Hilbert.

108 DMU

In refurbished white with blue stripe livery, Class 108 Driving Trailer Composite Lavatory (DTCL) E56198 complete with WYPTE branding, was the lead vehicle of a four-car working to Leeds, stood at Knottingley station on May 5th 1980. The nearby Knottingley depot was having an open day and the service trains to and from Leeds were strengthened to cope with the crowds. Martyn Hilbert.

105 DMU

In the days when the Ormskirk line was still double track from Farington Curve Junction on the WCML to Midge Hall, a Newton Heath Cravens Class 105 Power-Twin, M50757 + M50815 was passing over Lodge Lane Crossing with an Ormskirk to Preston service on May 15th 1981. The foreground was the location of Moss Lane Junction , where a short double track section ran to Lostock Hall at the top of Farington Curve, once enabling trains to run direct from Liverpool and Ormskirk to East Lancashire. The junctions were taken out and the track lifted following rationalisation of the track layout/signalling in the Preston area at the time of preparation for electrification and resignalling in 1972. The well-worn former Up Line to Ormskirk formed of cast iron chairs and bullhead rail, was taken out of use in 1983 and has since been lifted. Martyn Hilbert.
