122 DMU

Class 122 Eastern Region route learner TDB975309 stabled at Doncaster, date unknown. The formed 55008 was in departmental use from 1974 to 1982. It has had a gas cylinder box added to the right of the left hand bogie, probably to allow a cooker or boiler on board. Tiered seating has been added to both ends, rising towards the centre of the vehicle. The seats are in the style of that used on the Derby Lightweights with the grabrail behind the headrolls, possibly reclaimed from withdrawn vehicles. Almost all the doors have had the handles removed, and the destination boxes have been removed from the roof domes. Stuart Mackay Collection.

The Way it Was. Six car Derby Class 107 DMU racing towards Hillington East and Glasgow Central on an afternoon working from the Ayrshire coast. The vast majority of Ayrshire DMU services were non stop from Paisley Gilmour Street to Glasgow Central (omitting the intermediate stations at Hillington and Cardonald) and were usually flat out at this stage. A few DMU services stopped at Hillington West, probably for workers in the adjacent Hillington Industrial Estate, seen in the background. Saturday 30 May 1981. alicia hartman.

The Way it Was. Swindon Inter-City 126 420 and classmate racing towards Hillington East station on the 15:15 Ayr to Glasgow Central service. The quadruple tracks were reduced to two tracks with electrification to Gourock and Wemyss Bay in 1967. Much of the electrification steelwork was founded in the formation vacated by the fast lines. At least there were still two through routes to the Ayrshire coast at that time, one via Paisley Canal and this via Paisley Gilmour Street. However, this scene has much changed and a third track (electrified) has been installed as part of capacity improvements between Shields Junction and Paisley. Derby Suburban Class 116 threads its way through the complex trackwork on the approach to Glasgow Central High Level with the 14:12 (SO) from East Kilbride. The DMBS of Set 166 is all blue but the trailer is in blue / grey. The Class 314 EMU in the background would have been a rare visitor to the High Level at that time. Class 107 DMU departs Glasgow Central High Level on the 14:50 to Edinburgh Waverley via Shotts. Platforms 1 and 2 are immediately behind the DMU. If you wanted to get to Edinburgh in a hurry this wasn’t the way to go with about 13 intermediate stops over the 46 miles to Edinburgh! Saturday 09 May 1981. alicia hartman.

Set 135 at Muirhouse South Junction, heading for Glasgow Central on the 10:12 from East Kilbride. The former Glasgow St Enoch line (St Enoch station closed in 1966) is on the right. The line on the left is the Cathcart Circle, electrified in 1962. The large building in the distance is the former Glasgow Corporation Tramway Works (Coplawhill). By that time it was the Transport Museum. However, it relocated to Kelvin Hall in 1987, only to further relocate to a new purpose built ‘Riverside Museum’ in 2011. Coplawhill Works is still extant as the ‘The Tramway Theatre’ but the shed nearest the railway was demolished and a Gurdwara has been constructed. Muirhouse South was previously known as Strathbungo Junction and the former Strathbungo station, closed in 1962, is immediately behind the camera. Tuesday 12 May 1981. alicia hartman.

Derby Class 107 triple heads south and crosses Haggs Road on a skew bridge, forming the 12.14 Glasgow Central to East Kilbride service. The DMU has passed under the west side of the electrified Cathcart Circle and the next stop will be Pollokshaws West. The wooded area in the distance is part of Pollok Park. Unlikely it worked again after this date but didn't go for scrap from Tyseley until November 1989. It was replaced by 975540 which moved from the Western Region. On Tour With The Class 13 Army.
