Having climbed the gradient from Farington Curve Junction on the WCML, a two-car Class 104/108 hybrid DMU formed of cars M53501 & M53934 was passing Lodge Lane Crossing on Farington Moss with a lunchtime Preston to Ormskirk service on January 7th 1988. In the foreground is the part dismantled former Up Line that was taken out of use in 1983, prior to which double track had been retained from Farington Curve Junction to Midge Hall. The DMU is passing through the site of the one-time Moss Lane Junction, where until 1972 there was a direct link from the Ormskirk route that connected with the East Lancashire line at the top of Farington Curve. Martyn Hilbert.
Complete with its first class saloon, Derby built Class 108 Driving Trailer Composite Lavatory (DTCL) M56212 (coupled with DMBS M50626), was stabled in the sidings at Llandudno Junction on May 26th 1979. Martyn Hilbert.
In refurbished white with blue stripe livery, a Metro-Cammell two-car Class 101 DMU formed of cars E56073 & E51443 was stood in the bay at Cambridge on April 30th 1980. Both cars would be withdrawn from service in 1992. Martyn Hilbert.
Class 119 Cross-Country set B590 (51087 + 59418 + 51058) was entering Droitwich Spa station with a Birmingham New Street (via Bromsgrove) to Hereford when I took this image on 6 July 1985. The main point of this viewpoint was to include the centre pivot lower quadrant signals in case they were replaced with colour lights in the near future. They weren't, and still are in use in 2024 unlike the trackwork leaving the former coal yard which has long been removed. Peter Tandy.
Class 121 55033 ready to depart from Stratford-upon-Avon with the 12:13 to Leamington Spa on 12 February 1992. Peter Tandy.
Class 121 single car 55033 was the unit selected to be painted into a colourful livery marking the Midline brand. The colour scheme isn't really apparent in this picture of T013 in Stratford-upon-Avon on the murky day of 12 February 1992 especially as the light was so poor there was no point in wasting any slide film on a shot. The unit was working the two-hourly shuttles between Stratford and Leamington and was shortly to leave with 12.13 to the latter. Peter Tandy.
A single unit on Stratford-upon-Avon to Leamington Spa duties, Class 122 55009 pictured from the towpath of the Grand Union canal on 1 July 1985 just after leaving Hatton and having crossed over both main lines from platform 3. Peter Tandy.
I was in Stratford-upon-Avon East signalbox on 29 June 1985 having a chat with the bobby when class 101 TS418 (53310 + 59128 + 53326) left the station with a late afternoon train to Birmingham Moor Street. The bridge in front of the unit shows where the line crosses over the Stratford canal. Peter Tandy.
Class 101 DMU set TS418 (53310 + 59128 + 53326) was stuck on Birmingham to Stratford-upon-Avon trains for at least 3 consecutive days and on the middle day, 30 June 1985, I photographed it passing Wilmcote on the way to Stratford. Peter Tandy.
Class 101 DMU set TS418 (53310 + 59128 + 53326) seen northwards at Hatton with a Leamington Spa to Birmingham Moor Street all stations local service on 1 July 1985. Peter Tandy.
Two three-car Met-Camm DMUs, perhaps with a CCT on the rear. No real details came with the negative, there was a hint it could be drawing into Backworth station but looking at images from that era I would have expected a third rail for that location. With the yellow panel and no blue vehicles, the date will be circa mid-1960s. Stuart Mackay Collection.
A GRC&W DMU in Minehead station on 5 December 1970, about four weeks before services ended. The centre is W59419, so the power cars are presumably W51060 and W51088. Stuart Mackay Collection.
Class 119 DMU set P584, presumably 51098 + 59429 + 51070, with the 14:08 Exeter - Paignton service at Teignmouth on 15 June 1975. Stuart Mackay Collection.
Class 120 DMBF SC51784 in Glasgow Works on 6 April 1980. It had been placed in store after the Oyne derailment in May 1978 and would be withdrawn in December 1980 and would linger for a number of more years before being cut. Stuart Mackay Collection.
Two Class 108 DMUs in platform 4 of Bridlington station in May 1986. Stuart Mackay Collection.
The Monmouthshire Railway Society DMU Demise / Cardiff Valleys Farewell tour at Pontycymer in the Garw Valley on 26 September 1992. It was formed of two two-car sets, formed of C395 (51140 + 51153) and C392 (51147 + 51134). Stuart Mackay Collection.
Class 117 DMU set 117313 - reduced to a two-car (presumably 51339 + 51382) in platform 17 of Edinburgh Waverley, no doubt on a Fife Circle service, circa November 1999. Stuart Mackay Collection.
Class 117 DMU set 426 (presumably 51406 + 59516 + 51364) approaching Barry station with the 14:17 Caerphilly - Barry Island service on 28 May 1987. The set had been transferred from Reading to Canton a couple of weeks earlier and while the L from the set number has been removed the C has not yet been added. It would move on to Tyseley in October. Stuart Mackay Collection.
A two-car Class 110 and a two-car Class 108 heading north between Newbiggin and Long Marton on the Settle and Carlisle Line on 1 April 1989. This is near Black Leases Farm with Maiden Way bridge in the background. Stuart Mackay Collection.
