381. DUST COATS FOR DRIVERS

Mr.Read raised the question of issue of dust coats to drivers whether employed full or part time on diesel units and it was agreed that drivers on a fixed link should have a personal issue and drivers employed part time on diesel units be supplied from depot stocks as an impersonal issue.

382. SUBURBAN UNITS - DOOR ARRANGEMENTS

Drawing DE/1876 was considered which shows proposed 3-car unit with approximately 50 more seats than in the standard unit with additional doors and which was necessarily of inevitable local stock appearance, in order to reduce station time to a minimum.

Mr.Gould said this unit was proposed only for peak traffic in heavy suburban areas and appearance and visibilty would be sacrificed for the advantages stated.

Mr.Stanley can turn over to production of these units without difficulty and it was agreed that the matter be noted for future possibility.

383. CONVEYANCE OF PARCELS TRAFFIC

Noted - letter from B.T.C of 21st October stating that Messrs.Cravens have been asked to quote for the supply of three parcels vans for the West Cumberland area and the firm's tender is still awaited; it is not proposed that these three parcels vans shall be additional to those authorised in the 1392 and 577 submissions and the order for them is to be cancelled from Derby building.

384. FUEL OIL

Sub-Committee minute 58 noted, and agreed no further action be taken for the present. Also noted - Motive Power Committee Minute 1053 of 21.4.55. as follows :-

"Discussion ensued on fuelling facilities; the Chairman stated that it is the responsibility of Motive Power Superintendents to decide the capacity of storage tanks and facilities required. It was not the intention that the B.T.C. should build their own fuel oil tank wagons in view of :-

  (i) large fleet would be required owing to scattered motive power depots;

 (ii) cost of oil presumably includes a proportion to cover provision of tank wagon by Oil Companies;

(iii) if railway provides oil tanks, it is doubtful if there will be any reduction in price of oil;

 (iv) approximate cost of 20-ton wagon is £900/£1,000."
