Investigation into introduction of diesel units to be re-opened on the basis of replacing existing services as diesel unit services would be useful during installation of electrical equipment to save station working and greater acceleration to reduce Permanent Way slacks.
The Chairman stated that the on the Eastern Region examination by Motive Power staff is only carried out every four days compared with a daily examination on the L.M.R., the Eastern Region thereby reducing light mileage and maintenance costs. The less frequent examinations as carried out by the Eastern Region, would reduce the requirements for covered accommodtion and pits and the Chairman asked for the matter to be given full consideration by the departments concerned.
Noted that report in respect of Eastern Operating Area now completed and will be submitted shortly. Agreed that, as B.T.C. have approved the whole of the Manchester Part 1 Scheme, no further submission required in respect of L.M. Operating Area. Also not necessary to submit Eastern Operating Area report to B.T.C. but to be circulated for information of Commitee.
One 3-car unit to be delivered in June, 1957.
Noted that B.T.C. have approved the allocation of 63 vehicles (42 motors and 21 trailers) to this scheme. Approval in principle has also been given to the provision of fuelling and maintence facilities at Derby (Etches Park) and Nottingham subject to the submission of a further report giving full finacial details and plans. Having regard to the urgency, however, it has been agreed that the necessary preliminary steps should be taken in connection with the work pending submission of plans and details.
