864. GENERAL MATTERS OF POLICY  (Contd.)

1. Position of Schemes still to be submitted  (Contd.)

(b)  St. Pancras - Leicester/Nottingham  (Contd.)

Mr.Howes explained that passengers for inter-city journeys would use the main line expresses and the semi-fast St.Pancras - Leicester/Nottingham services were designed to cater for passenger other than those for through journeys between the terminals.  The type of vehicles scheduled for these services was satisfactorily working similar services (e.g. Manchester - Birmingham, Birmingham - Llandudno, etc.), and it was the view of the Traffic Department that generally speaking the units were suitable for the proposed St.Pancras - Leicester/Nottingham services.

Mr.A.J.Johnson considered there would be some pressure from the public to provide more seating space and a higher standard of comfort in the proposed services.  He thought that the lavatory accomodation might be a little defficient for such services but not to the extent which the C.M.& E.E. had suggested.

With regard to the bogies, it was agreed the matter should be dealt with when considering the next item on the agenda.

The units to be used on the St.Pancras - Leicester/Nottingham service would be displaced stock from the electrified lines and it was not anticipated they would be available until about 1966/67.

The vehicles would require refurbishing before being put into the new services and it was agreed that the question of the desirability to modify seating should be resolved at that time.

The Planning Officer would communicate with the C.M.& E.E. in reply to the points raised and, in the light of the foregoing, invite him to sign the submission in its present form.

2.  Improved riding of Diesel Rail Cars

The Chairman stated the Commission had asked whether it was considered that bogie modification could be justified to any diesel rail cars additional to those already authorised (viz. 284 cars for Marylebone and St.Pancras Suburban services and Manchester Central/Liverpool Central express service).

A joint report hed been requested from the D.T.S. and C.M.& E.E. and it was noted that the necessary data was being collected.

In making the report it was decided that a recommendation should be included for the modification of the bogies on the vehicles to be used on the St.Pancras - Leicester/Nottingham services.
