Minute 1118. Development of Maintenance Requirements

866. SCHEMES AUTHORISED BUT NOT YET IN OPERATION

1. Marylebone Suburban Services

 (a) Progress in bogie modification and refurbishing of stock

Mr.Stanley reported the work was up to schedule.

(b) Introduction of Units, 1961

Seven diagrammed units had been introduced in steam timings on the 12th June, and it was reported that the diesel services were working quite well.

Mr.Taylor referred to difficulty in obtaining workshop staff for the new Marylebone Diesel Depot which had been brought ino use.  Despite every effort which had been made to recruit staff the position was very serious.

Mr.Howes, referring to the proposad stepping up of the diesel service during the period of the summer timetable and the introduction of further units in September, asked whether this was practicable in view of the staff position.

Mr.Taylor added that difficulty was also envisaged in staffing the new diesel locomotive depot at Cricklewood and the matter was seriously aggravated by the need to retain staff at Neaden and Cricklewood steam depots where shortages already existed, this restricting the transfer of staff to the new diesel depots at Marylebone and Cricklewood.

The Chairman asked Mr.Taylor to make a special report to the Management on the subject of staff shortages and to include recommendations for special measures considered necessary to meet the emergency.
