Works Photographs

Swindon Works

5C series ('Coach details')

welding metal frames in a jig

Taken on 22 December 1958, bodyside framework is being welded together in the jig. Behind the gentlemen is a completed panel for a bodyside. To the rear of the image a centre car can be seen partly constructed.

DMU front end buffer beam

Negative 5C/275
Dated 18 September 1959 and described as "Leading end - headstocks fitted". It shows the front end of a DMBS. Note the pretty uneven bodywork on the left side and the chalk on the buckeye to make the edges stand out.

DMU rear end buffer beam

Negative 5C/276
Dated 18 September 1959 described as "Trailing end - headstocks fitted". It shows the rear end of a DMBS.

5CR series ('Motors, trailers & diesel cars')

This series of interior images were all recorded in the Works photograph ledger (now held in the National Railway Museum) as taken on 18 June 1959. However, some of the delivery dates of the vehicles were earlier (59396 and 51010: 11/4/59; 59402: 18/4/59) and I suspect they were taken on 8 April along with the exterior view (MT88) of Sc59393.

Negative 5CR/132
The corridor Trailer First Sc59393 Note the table strapped to the wall at the far end - this could be fitted into any compartment when needed.

Railway coach compartment with door to outside

Negative 5CR/132A
The centre ('D') compartment of Trailer First SC59393. This was the only one of the seven compartments to have an exterior door. The Trafolyte sign above the door notes the paneling is mahogany.

Railway coach compartment with curtains for the windows

Negative 5CR/133
Compartment B in Trailer First SC59393.

Interior of railway coach

Negative 5CR/134
The front saloon of 'intermediate' power car (DMSL) Sc51010, taken from the centre of the vehicle looking towards the cab end. The saloon was smoking and would have green seats, the rear saloon was non-smoking and would have light brown seats.

Interior of railway coach looking along whole length

Negative 5CR/135
The interior of DMSL Sc51010, taken from the rear of the vehicle in the non-smoking saloon looking through the smoking saloon towards the cab end. Note the lamp shades - they lack the silver rings normally found on DMUs but are the same shape.

Railway coach compartment with spartan interior

Negative 5CR/136
Compartment F (second class) of TCKL Sc59402. A mini table is fitted but there were also brackets for a larger table to be fitted (stored in the end of the vehicle). There is a Trafolyte tablet above the window noting what the paneling is - 'Tapestry Dove Grey Formica'. The seat covering would be green (with black pattern) moquette.

Looking along corridor inside railway coach with windows to outside on left

Negative 5CR/137
The corridor of TCKL Sc59402 taken from the second class end. A swing door divided the four second class compartments from the three first class. It is wedged open in this view but was just past the exterior door - note the divider in the ceiling. The 1956/7 build for the WR/E&G line had veneer paneling along the corridor on the exterior side, this batch had Formica paneling and also had the formica panel inlays on the lower compartment side.

Toilet inside a railway coach

Negative 5CR/138
The toilet in DMSL Sc51015. The vehicle was new to Ayr on 8/8/59.

After a gap in the number series, the next three (still noted in the register as taken on 18 June 1959) show DMBSL Sc51037, new to Ayr 6/6/59.

Guard's compartment in a railway coach

Negative 5CR/214
The guard's van.

The interior of a railway coach with 2 plus 2 seating

Negative 5CR/215
Taken in the front saloon looking to the rear of the vehicle — note this saloon had 'aircraft' style seating (all facing the same direction).

Looking along the interior of a railway coach

Negative 5CR/216
Taken in the rear saloon looking to the front of the vehicle. This saloon had the seating in bays of four.

MT series (possibly 'Matted Trains'?)

three-quarter view of exterior of a railway coach

Negative MT88
Trailer first Sc59393, dated April 8 1959. The corridor vehicle had forty-two seats in seven compartments, and a toilet at each end. It was listed as new to Ayr depot three days later on the 11th where it spent its whole career, other than a short spell on loan to Leith Central soon after delivery. Withdrawn in 1981, disposal would be at Snailwell.
