29/03/91 - 51941 + 52064 arrived at the Severn Valley Railway. They were a replacement for 53454 + 53528 which were originally destined for the line but were found to contain asbestos between the underframe and floor. The 108 set, T068, was made available instead after a proposed sale to Balfour Beatty for a Channel Tunnel inspection unit was cancelled.

Collision involving Class 108
Class 108 DMBS M51921 was withdrawn for an unknown reason in October 1970.
Sanding down the drivers side of DMBS 51941 during a repaint in 2002 the first blue livery had the correct number. However further sanding revealed another set of white vinyl numbers but these comprised 51921. Further sanding found green paint next, again with 51921, and then another green layer with 51921.
It appears the drivers side was rebuilt using parts from 51921 - possibly much of the bodyside. On the bufferbeam of 51941 there were two large welds on the inside of the drivers-side buffers. Further sanding of the bodyside revealed that there had been extensive replacement of lower panels on the drivers side (there was only blue paint - no green underneath). It also carried a builders plate for lot 30660 (a DMC) on that side.
It may be that the two vehicles were in a sideswipe together and one good vehicle made from two? Any further information would be welcome.
Preserved - more details.

A late Summer scene on the Preston to Ormskirk line, as a two-car Class 108 with DMBS M51941 leading, accelerates away from the token exchange at Midge Hall whilst working a Preston to Ormskirk service on September 5th 1979. The former crossing keepers cottage is on the right of the unit, the building being set back as the route was once double track in the days before the line was severed at Ormskirk and services ran to and from Liverpool Exchange. The landscape here is dominated by Globe Mill an animal feed plant located adjacent to the signalbox and level crossing at Midge Hall. Martyn Hilbert.
Viewed through the blackened stone arch of the B5247 Bretherton Road bridge, a two-car Class 108 DMU with DMBS M51941 trailing, accelerates away from Croston with an Ormskirk to Preston service on September 5th 1979. The surviving single line along this route was once the Down (Northbound) track when the route was a double track mainline. Clearly visible here, the formation is slewed across to follow the former Up line in order to serve the remaining platform at Croston station. Its difficult to image now that non-stop Glasgow to Liverpool Exchange services once hurtled through Croston at 60-70 mph. Martyn Hilbert.
Having just collected the single line token (the hoop & pouch visible in the cab window), Class 108 Driving Motor Brake Second (DMBS) M51941 was accelerating away from Midge Hall with a Preston to Ormskirk service on July 23rd 1985. The home signal that protects the level crossing in the Down direction, is the last remaining semaphore in the Preston area. Until 1983, the section between Farington Curve Junction on the WCML and Midge Hall was double track, and the pointwork where the former Up line became single track is located between the two cars of the unit. Martyn Hilbert.
