101 DMU

May 1978

A Class 101 enters York in May 1978. The leading DMBS appears to be from the batch that marked the transition from the 4-lamp front to the 2-lamps + 2-digit headcode arrangement, which I'm told is. number range 50198-50209 Graeme Phillips Collection.

101 DMU

2nd May 1978

Set: 175

Refurbished late in 1976, DMBS 51470 is stabled on Ayr MPD as part of a 3 car unit. In regular service conditions the white and blue livery, which denoted refurbished units at the time, was found difficult to keep clean so units concerned were repainted into blue and grey livery and the stylised GG 'Greater Glasgow' emblem did not last very long either. 51470 was withdrawn in April 1988 and scrapped by MC Metals in Glasgow during October 1989. Bob Woolnough.

101 DMU

3rd May 1978

Set: 172

Ayr MPD allocated refurbished Class 101 Set No.172 is seen waiting for departure time in Ardrossan Harbour Station on the 3rd May 1978. Formed of DMBS SC51469 leading, TCL SC59557 intermediate, & DMCL SC51536 trailing she is forming a Boat Train service to Glasgow Central Station. The Clyde can be glimpsed through the opening on the right hand side of the image. Bob Woolnough.

101 DMU

Set: B803

The Lea Valley Railway Club Camel Train tour at Plymouth North Road on 6 May 1978. Closest is B803 (presumably 51522 + 59546 + 51450). The tour made four return trips from Plymouth to Wadebridge. Stuart Mackay Collection.

6th May 1978

Set: B803

Class 101 DMU sets B803 (presumably 51522 + 59546 + 51450) and B800 (51515 + 59549 + 51445) arrive into Plymouth North Road ECS to form the Lea Valley Railway Club Camel Train railtour on Saturday 6 May 1978. Four return trips to Wadebridge were made, some with B803 and Class 120 set C558. Stuart Mackay Collection.

101 DMU

12th May 1978

Class 101 DTSL E56367 leads the 17:07 service to Durham out of Newcastle on 12 May 1978. On the left E56380 waits to depart with the 17:05 fast service to Haltwhistle (although Hexham is on the blind). This service ran non-stop to Corbridge, a 17:10 departure to Hexham would provide an all-stations service. Stuart Mackay Collection.

101 DMU

13th May 1978

In refurbished white with blue stripe livery, a two-car Class 101 DMU was approaching Settle Junction with a Leeds to Morecambe service on May 13th 1978. The blanked over top marker lamp means the DMBS should be from the small 50198-209 batch, and although the number cannot be fully read it appears to end in a 2, so this is presumably 50202, which was a Neville Hill vehicle at the time. Martyn Hilbert.

101 DMU

15th May 1978

Set: 187

A Class 101 formed of DMCL SC51524, TCL SC59562 and DMBS SC51467 call at a very peaceful Leuchars Station with an early afternoon service from Dundee to Edinburgh Waverley on the 15th May 1978. All had been refurbished in the white & blue colours and were allocated to Glasgow Eastfield MPD at this time running as Set 187. The central bay platform for the St Andrews branch which closed in January 1969 is clearly still visible. The white houses to the right of the image are part of the married quarters for RAF Leuchars which at this time was a very busy RAF Fighter Station. Bob Woolnough.
