101 DMU

2nd December 1963

A Metro-Cammell DMU departs from the small station of Hammerwich on a grey 2nd December 1963, it is forming a Burton-upon-Trent to Wolverhampton train. Hammerwich lies mid-way between Lichfield and Brownhills, the station opened in 1845 and closed when passenger services ceased in 1965. It had a substantial house and booking/parcels office, platform accomodation being provided by two differing styles of wooden shelter. Today the station house has been renovated and is still occupied as a private house, some track remains in place but sections of it have been removed. Image taken by Peter Shoesmith. Class 101 DMUs at Whitby Town in 1964. A busy scene, with three Class 101 units, plus loco-hauled stock is also visible behind the middle unit. At this time, Whitby was still linked to Scarborough, albeit requiring reversals at either end of the route to leave / access the stations, but this coastal route closed the following year, 1965. All three Met-Camms have different width of yellow panels. The set on the right is formed DMS/TBS/DMS. Graeme Phillips Collection.

The notes with this negative stated near Darlington, 1964. It shows an eight-car formation, Leeds on the destination blind. At the front is a four-car Met-Camm, with NE prefixes to the vehicle numbers, and the second vehicle has BUFFET on the side. The profile of the rear vehicles suggests they were built by Cravens.
