Early morning on the Exe Estuary, as a three-car Class 101 DMU with Driving Motor Brake Second 51246 leading, was departing from Starcross with the 07.42 Exeter St Davids to Paignton service on May 28th 1990. This service called at all stations, and waited in the Down Loop at Dawlish Warren station from 07.59 to 08.04 to enable the 22.30 Glasgow Central to Plymouth service (complete with its sleeping cars) to pass by at 08.02. A three-car Class 101/118 hybrid DMU running as Plymouth Laira set 826, was stood at Starcross with an Exeter St Davids to Paignton service on May 31st 1988. The outer driving cars were 51219 & 53223 with an UID Class 118 suburban centre trailer. Martyn Hilbert.

On a warm Spring evening, a three-car Class 101 DMU with Driving Motor Brake Second 51219 leading, was departing from Dawlish with an all-stations 18.23 Exeter St Davids to Paignton service on May 31st 1989. This was the period when following the banishment of almost new Class 142 Skipper units to the North, still serviceable first generation DMU sets were drafted in to the West Country to keep services running, prior to the appearance of Class 150/2 and Class 155 Sprinter units. Seen from another DMU is Class 101 set (P)826 at Dawlish with a Paignton service on 1 August 1989. Note how the surround of the destination blind has been painted black, and there seems to be some 'fillers' added to suit a narrower than normal blind. Stuart Mackay Collection.
